i am looking for a 2 year wild bird seed mix that is compatible with AB9. must be spring sown and ideal for pheasants as well as other birds.

yes to be fair i have used moir mix and find it better than maize as the deer and badgers don't bugger it up, just would like to try some other blends and 2 year mixes. also like mixes with higher seed rates as more margin for error.

Just out of interest, how do people destroy their mixes, especially after 2 years? We need to tackle a couple of small patches this year, we don't have a lot of kit and contractors will be reluctant to come for such small areas. One area we would like to re-drill with a spring mix probably in May, depending on weather.

Bright seeds seem to be popular in the shooting world. Worth a look at them?
I agree. Mine come from Brights. Big enough to matter yet small enough to care. They will tailor the mixes for you if you like. I asked them to add some chicory for year 2 cover (not so good for seed though - chaffinches strip them early in the autumn) and to remove the triticale for rat avoidance. We were supplementary feeding anyway.

Flail mower and then plough or rotavate? Glyphosate if required. To buy some kit to establish a few acres shouldn’t break the bank if contractor won’t come. Eg 3 furrow reversible rotavator and 3m drill.

All mine comes mixed, so I just direct drill the whole lot at a shallow depth. It all grew ok despite being sown in mid May and getting very little rain until late July.

I need to put some AB9 in, I don’t want to spend much so I was thinking I have barley, wheat and OSR in the shed if I mix that up and providing none make up more than 70% of the mix will NE be happy? Obviously I won’t have a seed invoice but I would make a record and put it in the stewardship file.

Your CS agreement will specify the species mix. If not, it's in the handbook for a Mid Tier one.

Anyone know when you are allowed to destroy an existing AB9 2 year crop. I want to clear up the existing patch with some sheep and replant in different field.

I asked NE this morning at 9, they didn’t know. Said they would get back to me..., oh and the handbook seems a bit vague about it.

It would also be really rather wonderful if they payed me for 2018 before I have to buy the seed for 2019.
