yeah, naah . . .

i wouldnt

they probably full of brucellosis, leptospirosis & Q fever . . .

one of the big isues with wild pigs here is the disease & biosecurity risk, which is why govts are so keen to control them

personally, i wear disposable gloves when handling them

That brought a smile to my lips! I knew an old boy who was one hell of a character. Ex-game warden in Africa, behind the lines in Burma, etc. Told me about eating pork in Burma. Apparently, if the village pigs noticed you slipping off into the bush for a private moment they would follow you out! Some of his mates did not listen to the warnings and had some interesting medical experiences when they came back to the UK....

there were very good & real health reasons why both Jews & Moslems originally forbade eating pork . . .

I agree. Genetically, swine are pretty close to humans, so there are plenty of zoonoses that cross the species. No safe meat storage in those ancient times either, in the Middle East.

And of course why it wasnโ€™t generally consumed here in months without an โ€œrโ€ in their spelling.
Thank goodness for refrigeration, pork consumption should now be compulsory for all religions at all times.

You're in the wrong species - Moslems have a higher birth rate than Christians, so demand is ultimately going to drop. Chicken seems to the the only universal meat.

This is all moot. The mass market for meat will be supplied by bioreactors, not animals. There will always be a market for "real" meat, but it will become a luxury for many.

Yes, until a couple of years ago pork was the most consumed meat worldwide, despite two major religions foregoing it. Chicken has of course overtaken it.
xxxxxxxxx PLC doesn't go too far wrong and have been investing heavily in chicken production and processing in this area having only focussed on pork. They are still pushing on fairly on the latter though as well.

what is wrong with shooting the pigs instead of baiting them with dogs then sticking them? or am i going soft in my old age?
Thereโ€™s nothing wrong in shooting them same as nothing wrong in getting dogs on I would guess itโ€™s because they donโ€™t stand still for long or are in cover so you wouldnโ€™t get as many

dogs etc are used mainly for "fun" or "sport" ( although, personally I dont "get" it )

for serious control, a combined approach of trapping, coordinated 1080 baiting programs amongst neighbours & aerial shooting campaigns are the best methods

there are 3 big problems with hunting them with dogs
1 - you dont get 100% kill rate. Far from it. We regularly see mobs of pigs in the 100's, groups of 20 or so are very common. How many you going to catch with dogs ? The ones who get away just become harder to catch
2 - because it is done for "fun" there is no incentive to catch all the pigs. You need to leave "breeding stock" to continue the "sport". In cases, people have specifically introduced feral pigs into areas, purely for this reason. In NSW it is ILLEGAL to keep or transport live feral pigs. They are a HUGE biosecurity & environmental risk
3 - the worst thing about pig chasing with dogs are the feral c@$ts who actually chase the pigs. They have no respect for farm boundaries, trespass laws etc etc . They will cut fences or drive through unharvested crops without a care. Pig chasers actually cause more problems than just small numbers of pigs. A very large part of "rural crime" here revolves around "pig chasers"
I personally have a "shoot to kill" policy for any unattended dogs I see.

it all depends if you want a bit of "sport", or you are trying to control a serious pest species that causes very real biosecurity, environmental & financial damage

Coordinated aerial shooting, with professionals out of helicopters, over an entire district, is the best way to seriously reduce their numbers. This then needs to be followed up with trapping & 1080 baiting to keep the remaining numbers down, again over the whole district.
Pigs are very mobile & not that territorial. . .

I was on a very interesting online meeting last night where the speaker was an expert on wild boar, working for APHA.
They are quite close to being able to use a one dose per lifetime contraceptive, delivered via food. This will first be rolled out through Grey Squirrels.
