Wild oats in Spring Barley

I have a block of land in SB, HSS drilled with the Freeflow straight into overwintered cultivation after it greened up and was sprayed off.
Seed came from very clean block on a separate farm, the aim was a cheap grow.
Where I drilled has historically been bad for wild oats, so I succumbed to the conclusion that I should use something to ensure no horrible oats sticking up above the canopy.

Agronomist suggested Axial Pro at a rate of 0.65L/ha. This went on at T1 in a timely manner. However, the level of healthy WO is truly shocking - there are genuinely areas where you cannot see barley for WO.

Have others experienced poor control of WO this year, in particular with this product? Awful lot of money spent to have as many oats in a field as barley.

I've normally found axial a good product so can't explain your results but I prefer to use it at a lower rate and earlier on......
Possible antagonism with fungicide? But CTL has gone now...
As you said though been a funny year this year and herbs have struggled, particularly in beet.....

Crop was drilled 30 of March - 2nd April, Axial pro applied 7th May as per photograph. BB95B2A3-EA99-4A36-993F-0ABC6C251ACE.png
At this timing, I had enough plants to spray, but also am aware of WO germinating after the 7th which is arguably unavoidable. Any earlier and I would have missed more. The bulk of them, however, would have made contact with the Axial, the ones that germinated after spraying are noticeably smaller and contribute far less to the population.

I’m not looking to sack my agronomist, as the rate prescribed was agreed by us both and has proven to be a reliable rate in other scenarios.

I am asking to see if anyone else has an opinion on the rate, or the strange growing year we’ve had and the implications they’ve experienced on their crops in a similar situation due to this.

Every day is a school day for me.

Same here, Axial Pro @ 0.6/ha and have a healthy crop still

I've sprayed most of my spring barley with foxtrot for the first time this year and the results were good but because of the odd weather pattern this year a few WO have appeared after the rain.
One block which was past the foxtrot cut off date had 0.25lt/ha axial pro plus a litre of MSO and that's worked a treat. I didnt have enough to do the whole block and I ended up leaving a couple of tram lines untreated and you can see to the line where was sprayed.

The axial pro label does have a recommendation for extra MSO in certain situations but for what it costs I chuck in 0.5% as a rule.

Had axial pro on one field last year and it stunted the wild oats. They did eventually get back up and going again. I complained and got a set of crappy nozzles, I wasn’t best pleased. No explanation as to why it failed to fully work. Sprayed axial and a adigor for years before and never missed a beat.
