We have one pair of swallows nesting in the buildings this year, there used to be a dozen or more but this has dwindled especially in the last few years.

I wonder if they have all made it back yet really?

All our buildings are post 2007. Swallows come and look every year, there were 3 in the yard 2 nights ago. Apparently they need mud so we're digging a pond to see if that helps.

On the wildlife theme , I was sitting out a couple of days back , enjoying the sun , and sitting next to a biggish clump of self seeded aquilegia . It was busy all day with a constant flow of bumble bees to-ing and fro-ing . A few different varieties, a very big one with a tan coloured hairy behind , a smaller almost black one , and another mid sized and a bit stripey . It keeps being said that there is a shortage of bumble bees , but we have plenty here . I'm told that aquilegia is particularly attractive to them , but strangely I never saw a honey bee near , and we have plenty of them too . Perhaps they don't socialise ?
