Probably like the rhino horn hunters. Kill an endangered species animal, take the horn off it because you are stupid enough to believe it has medicinal properties then leave the body to rot. The people who do this are fools of the highest order. So stupid they can’t even see they soon won’t even have a supply, never mind the fact it’s all nonsense anyway.

Which leads me to question the information coming from official Chinese sources about what we know as wet markets.

On the radio on Friday (WatO on R4), a Chinese official called them farmer's markets where live small domesticated animals can be bought, along with vegetables and fruit. She denied that exotic wild species are available for sale anywhere, because that would be illegal. (Part of her everso polite mini-rant of denial that covid-19 originated in illegal food trade was to mention that Britain started BSE, so that's an interesting deliberate conflation of virus with prion for political spin to analyse!)

Then there is information such as that upthread saying that impoverished Chinese are somehow reduced to eating wild species because they are displaced from their traditional areas.

Both wrong. There has been a recent fashion for increasingly well off Chinese to dabble with eating exotic meat that's barely dead, and going slumming to acquire it. They really don't care about animal welfare, provenance, or hygiene. It's all about showing off - and quite a bit about showing off using the cloak of tradition to do so.
Corrupt officials turn blind eyes, because it's money, innit.

So while the USA returns to port the Chinese play out as a military power in the South China Sea. A long way from here. I suppose the Chinese government is acting as the British government did through the late 18 and 19C. Expansionism

The only way to stop that is to make Vietnam, South Korea and Japan into military superpowers with assets/force composition and sizes at least akin to the UK/France.
