i have a decent contact at Rolls - given what has happened to them thanks to covid they increasingly see small scale nuclear as the potential saviour of the company

if other power source are cut i think we maybe amazed at what can get past regulation very quickly

re opening coal mines / fracking or more renewables is not fast either or without regulator challenge

Without wishing to go off topic again but for a little clarity....

The Rolls "small scale reactors" need a building the size of 3 football pitches so not exactly shipping container size that the small scale conjures up and will probably cause all sorts of planning and protest issues
And Cudrilla (sp?), the only fracking firm with actual boreholes ready to go have until the end of this month to seal them with concrete ... by court order gained by government

Truly it is a mad world

I think you are quite wrong.
Sirma Karapeeva (head of NZ of NZ Meat Processors/Exporters Assn.) stated on the farming radio programme "The Country" today that the last year Jan to Jan NZ export volumes (near equal mix of sheep meat and beef) has risen by 25% to China, up 32% to USA and up 70% to Japan. This is in spite of more relatively cheaper frozen product to chilled shifted due to shipping problems and lack of timely refrigerated containers available when required due to global pandemic disruption.
Unless the UK buyers can outbid the 3 mentioned above, I would think NZ small legs (traditionally the most numerous item) will be very scarce in UK shop chillers.

The rebuild of the Chinese pig herd has a long way to go as only some regions are now clear of African Swine Fever. However cheap grain from Russia may become available as no other nation will be buying excluding North Korea.

we don't need much kiwi lamb to shaft our market....just enough to cause a temporary glut .....the 'blip' from that oversupply taking months to smooth out....i think we've seen such an episode earlier this year already

Was an interesting bit On the fact wheat represents 15% of the worlds calories and we are looking down the barrel of a 50% reduction in volume. Loss of 30% in Russia/Ukraine and a 30% reduction everywhere yes.

That’s a 7% reduction in worldwide calpries. Ignoring the other crops they grow. Some people are going to go hungry.

My midriff has enough to make up the Ukrainian shortfall I am afraid I have to admit.

That is simply not the case.

In principle, small submarine-scale reactors could be used for civilian purposes, but there are a lot of technical and regulatory hurdles to cross before they become a reality. Royces have never built a civilian small modular reactor, nor has the office of nuclear regulation ever licenced one for use.

The ONR has only just started the generic design assessment. This will take just as long for small reactors as it did for conventional sized reactors, if not longer due to the novelty of the concept.

For context, I was working on the design of the next generation of submarine reactors in 2012/13. That reactor design still hasn't been built.

Looks from the news today like the below was spot on ? are Rolls Royce shares a buy ?

reserves won’t boil my kettle today

this is going to be an immediate problem

small nuclear is the fastest solution- Rolls-royce make turn key plants that apparently can be live in about 6 months, use proven nuclear sub tech and can power a average town

Very interesting to see that TFF members come from such a cross section of society as we can learn so much from each other (y)
One thing TFF clearly demonstrates on a regular basis is that farmers are anything but a simple bunch of country yokels.......

Even the many with no academic qualifications are capable business people, some running very significant businesses in a rapidly changing environment.

Capable business people and academic prowess do not go hand in hand In my experience. Lots of people without a degree create and run great businesses. and vice Versa I’d fear for a lot of academics if they had to live in the commercial world.
