The battle statistics coming from Western media and US intelligence could be exagerrated or reduced too. Do you think our leaders and media would really want us to know the battle is going badly for the Ukranians and Russia has the upper hand? We're yet to see a response to sanctions from Russia. How long can Europe last without any Russian gas supply? Long way to go yet before there'll be any resolution to this. Best option we have is for NATO to throw everything at Russia. Better fighting his now than later I recon. Especially before any other dictators look to take military opportunities.
I take most reports with a pinch of salt, but the ability of Zelensky to walk around central Kyiv calling on the populace to resist the invasion tells a story.

I have held from the start that the West needed to stand firm, but all the hand wringing and saying that nobody would be sending troops to help played right into Putins hands.

I went to a wedding of my wife’s cousin in the north of Finland a few years ago and at the meal was sat next to the Grandfather who could remember the area being burnt to the ground in WW2. Let’s say he wasn’t overly keen on Russia!

They still have full national service in Finland to counter any Russian threat. My wife’s cousins at least, all in their early 20s took it seriously and viewed their year or two in the forces as necessary.

I can’t help but compare Zelensky’s heroic response to that of the Afghan President, who seemed to leave Kabul on a private jet with the hold stuffed full of cash at the first whiff of a scrap with the Taliban.

What makes some nations fighters, and others wet flannels?

There is no 'Afghanistan'- this is the difference. It is a country delineated by a few lines on a map. In reality this isn't the case the people there have segmented themselves in ways that we in the West don't really understand.

The Ukrainian people will identify as Ukrainian and identify with their country of birth, irrespective of the actual locality they were born in. In Afghanistan people identify themselves in a variety of differing ways. If you ask about someone's cultural identity, their heritage or place of birth in Afghanistan you will get a list of things but very few will identify as 'Afghan'. There are Hazaras, Tajiks, Uzbeks and to further confuse the issue they may speak different dialects or languages. Afghanistan is an ancient place that has developed in it's own way for hundreds of years and over many generations. In Europe, we had a series of successive empires and most places followed a religious or feudal type system for centuries around which cultural norms were established.
If you are so interested, Professor Thomas Barfield explains Afghanistan far better than I could.

I wonder if a lot of these reserves were moved before the war?
Even his yacht left Hamburg before the war despite not having repairs completed.

The level of potential internal inflation in Russia could be huge due to the devaluation of the currency. Putin will have to seriously curb any grain exports from Russia to avoid the citizens starving. China won’t be able to save the day and are wary of getting too close.
Yep it looks like its wheelbarrow time to buy a load of bread on Monday morning, that will go down well with the masses that are pee poor anyway

There's quite a bit of natural resources, but in the eyes of Putin it's the prestige of reuniting the Soviet Union... albeit without communism. That’s why I firmly believe that the long game involves going further west.
Putin has said as much.

If that is true it is a whole lot scarier than what is going on in the Ukraine at the moment.
Yes.
I understood there was a properly outfitted WW2 bunker in London underground which was used extensively by the government?

Yes - £13 (in 2013) to go down and look at. Impressive.

The Ukrainians will know. More than we ever could.

That's why they're fighting...

It's very disrespectful to suggest this is all down to Zelensky and the Ukrainians are too stupid to know their own minds.

They can also remember in the not too distant past, what life under USSR rule entailed.

True but a united response was needed and that took considerable diplomatic time to achieve.

Maybe that’s why Russia is in Kyev for “talks”

I only heard a snippet on the telvisuals this morning, but those 'talks' appeared to involve all the former states of the USSR giving up their NATO membership. Where does NATO membership end, as he travels west?

My son in law's mum, Polish and proud, is terrified that if Ukraine falls, Poland (and Hungary, Romania etc ) will be the front line. She wants her son, our daughter and their family to 'stay in UK'. And she isn't joking....

Now the Germans (even including their Greens) seem to be backing the sending of German manufactured defensive arms to Ukraine ……We can only hope that Putins “divide and rule” tactics (including his £8,000,000 support of Vote Leave) can be countered.

3x LAGR refuelling aircraft up at present, over the mountains in NE Romania, 1 NCHO up as well and look who got himself a new playground:

Pffft, I bet that pilot drinks Carling black label, he flying over the Black sea which is surely crawling with Russian warships.

I reckon there has to be fighter aircraft over those mountains, the terrain would make them impossible to spot on even the longest range radar and the tankers are at about 25,000ft or less- the refuelling flights are always going to and from and then orbiting that area.

FORTE 11 and 12 are drones, flying up from Italy.
