What's the magic solution then?
Build more ships, quickly!

But there is far more oil and gas still under the North Sea than most people realise; it will take time, so current nuclear will have to be used more and for longer, new nuclear will have to be used more widely - SMRs are going to be a much bigger thing than we previously thought. And renewables... expect hitherto environmentally unfriendly coastal barrages to be green-lighted.

2 billion a day the EU send to Russia
You sure? General figure for Russia is ~$60bns* per quarter from all sales of oil & gas to foreign buyers. That works out at $0.7bn per day from all foreign sources. The figure I've seen most often quoted for EU money to Russia is ~$4bns per month for gas, think you are hugely overstating the number, but happy to be shown reliable figures that correct me.

Big news, apparently that's 27 airworthy planes; hopefully there will be others to follow from other countries. Big question is, what will the US do with them...?

 💡 🇺🇦 :)
The planes are Polish owned MIG’s that are familiar to Ukranian pilots and to be supplied to them if Poland gets its way. These would be replaced in Poland with US fighters which Polish pilots could learn to fly at their leisure, assuming that they don’t already have a few in their airforce and may already be familiar with them.

The migs are heartening if they happen but it doesn't replace the airforce thats been lost, Ivan's air defence is more up to speed and the number of manpads we've thrown in may also be cause for concern to them in such a chaotic scene.

It would take the whole world’s fleet of LPG tankers, full time, to replace the gas that Germany alone currently imports through the existing pipeline from Russia.
Absolute rubbish. Using the last actual figures available for germany ie 2015 35% came from Russia 34% from Norway and 29% from the Netherlands. With pipelines from UK to both Netherlands and Belgium the UK already has capacity to export to Europe and several existing LNG terminals. Our gas usage is dropping dramatically as wind output increases and UK production is still significant.

In the westminster hour sunday evening an Oxford professor advised using milford haven as reception point for lng and reverse pump to EU to increase unloading facilities. John Redwood was also a guest. And yep he disagreed, basically taking a negative position in my view as anti EU. Have to listen yourself to the interview to guage but redwoods tone was really anti EU helping out at a european strategic level. An rs

Jeez....

But the Pentagon appeared to reject the proposal, saying it was not “tenable”.

In a statement, the US Department of Defense said the prospect of the jets departing from the base “to fly into airspace that is contested with Russia over Ukraine raises serious concerns for the entire Nato alliance”.

“We will continue to consult with Poland and our other Nato allies about this issue and the difficult logistical challenges it presents, but we do not believe Poland’s proposal is a tenable one,” John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said.

Poland is thought to have 28 of the Soviet-era warplanes, and had been in negotiation with the Biden administration on a three-way deal in which Warsaw would gave the planes to Ukraine, on condition that the US would provide the Polish air force with newer US fighters.

“Poland requests the United States to provide us with used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities,” Rau said in a statement on his ministry’s website. “Poland is ready to immediately establish the conditions of purchase of the planes.”

Rau requested other Nato allies with MiG-29 jets – a reference to Slovakia and Bulgaria – “act in the same vein”.

By handing them to the US, Poland is hoping to mitigate the risk of direct retaliation from Russia.

However, the US under secretary of state for political affairs, Victoria Nuland, said the Polish announcement had taken Washington unawares, calling it a “surprise move by the Poles”.

“To my knowledge, it wasn’t pre-consulted with us that they plan to give these planes to us,” Nuland told Congress. “I look forward when this hearing is over to getting back to my desk and seeing how we will respond to this proposal of theirs to give the planes to us.”

The idea of donating old warplanes to Ukraine was raised on 27 February by the EU foreign and security policy chief, Josep Borrell, who declared: “We are going to provide even fighter jets.” That announcement annoyed Polish officials, who said Warsaw was not properly consulted over a move that could expose the country to risk.

The Russian defence ministry did not address the issue directly but warned that any country that provided air fields for Ukrainian warplanes that were later used against Russians would be considered by Moscow as being involved in the conflict. Polish thinking is that when the planes are delivered to Ukrainian pilots, they will be taking off from an air base in Germany as US assets.
