And nobody saw that coming.
Obviously not anyone with the power and will to do something about it.
China poses the same kind of threat from the East. This might well spur the Chinese leader, whose position is far weaker than Putin’s in his country, to invade Taiwan and several islands and States around the South China Sea including The Spratlies. They have even more hold on The West than Russia with its energy, because they have usurped many vital Western industries and those that they don’t control they supply essential electronic and other parts for.

Sat in the kitchen watching BBC news and I find myself googling “ British nuclear deterrent” I mean what the actual f**k has the world become …
It has become unstable and volatile because The West has become complacent and fragmented, unwilling to acknowledge the real political economic and military threats that have always been there. Persuaded by hostile sock-puppets and useful fools such as the ‘environmentalists’ and ‘climate change activists', to change priorities to our great disadvantage. Just look at Germany giving away its low carbon nuclear power stations to rely more and more on Russian gas [and coal would you believe it!] which anybody with an ounce of common sense, even if they ignored the way Russia has blackmailed Ukraine in the past using gas, would have said was foolish if not reckless.

fair point but I wasnt suggesting leaving them unguarded.
I guess it depends if Ukrain intelligence believed Putin would go all out with airstrikes or just move troops into the eastern regions....

some noise suggests the airport near Kyiv which came under heavy helicopter attack earlier is in Russian hands... a wave of Russian transport aircraft reported to have taken off and indications of a massive convoy heading across the boarder... I think Kyiv may fall by morning

Germany is even less well run from a strategic and common-sense point of view than the UK. It caved in to naive ‘environmentalists’ and closed many of its nuclear power stations only to be overwhelmingly dependent on Russian energy. The ‘environmentalists’ and German Government have given Putin the leverage to dare invade Ukraine and he might not stop there even though many of the countries he might invade are part of NATO.

Putin is deranged and the warning signs have been there for a long time, including by sending his agents blatantly to poison even minor perceived enemies in the UK, several times, with both radioactive compounds and internationally banned chemical weapons. Yet he got away very lightly with a few lies. He has effectively threatened nuclear war against any country that stands in the way of his territorial ambitions. Make no mistake in thinking that it is bluster. He is stupid and deranged enough to start a Third World War. I wonder whether NATO is ready to retaliate when he does invade say Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania?
The wealthiest most powerfull man in the world , he aint stupid or deranged hes very clever , we are the stupid ones for underestimating him and now he is cleverly capitalising on our weakness , he aint stupid , underestimating the enemy is stupid , hes very very clever !

It’s the culmination of an absolutely disastrous EU foreign policy to pull Ukraine into the Western sphere of influence with absolutely no regard for Russian sensibilities or any plan whatsoever of how to guarantee Ukraine security when the Russians inevitably took umbridge.
Wonder what will happen to the 5bn euros we collectively leant them? Just yet another write off. Never mind the running away and ample supplies of excuses as to why we can’t really do a damn thing of any significance to help them.
I’m absolutely sick of hearing the meaningless words from our leaders. Be honest. We screwed up big time. We have let you down. We aren’t willing to put our lives where some of our mouths were.
Let’s hope for a miracle because it’s our only hope now.

Never met you Dr W but increasingly convinced you post from St Petersburg central rather than Middle Rasen and drive a Trabant not a Cyclone.
