Broadcasting on rolling stops it going too deep.
harrow after ensures better seed to soil contact .
thats set up well , with the rain weve had today

chicory in a month old reseed , it doesnt like too much competition i dont think.only thing is i possibly added a bit too much here. but the sheep will hammer it this winter.
as a plus it has helped nurse this grass and clover in the dry.

again broadcast on rolling and harrowed in with roller to follow.
may seem long winded process, but as failsafe as possible ime.

Edit , no fert added. also it was stubble from sb with sheep run over it until reseed, no cover crop or such like etc. im surprised it looks so green tbh. has had good rain though now.

Small seeds we roll before broadcasting and roll again.

Would have thought the harrow maybe a bit harsh and bury seed?

No.
over the years ive tried short cuts and still go back to doing as dad did .
the harrow keeps makes better seed to soil contact .
the seed bed should be fine and firm to start with remmeber which helps it not go too deep.

you would be surprised also at how they will come from deeper if they do go there

i use a lighhtened einbok to cover the seed.

in the old days we had a heavy set of drags for working down ground and a much lighter set for harrowing in grass seed. (seed harrows).
its funny how when your'young and clever ' you think you can crack on but in the long game it sort of comes around at you.

I always roll before sowing grass on a worked down seedbed lightly scar it after with just the ‘ball’ of the chain harrows broadcast seed with vicon or twin disc ether Harrow again just lightly or just roll.
Always use a ballast roll.
