from what i can see ELMS is going to make ploughing pretty financial unattractive

There really is no need to plough though and there is no doubt that it is responsible for a LOT of pollution

We have to do something about the damage done to climate, surely of all people farmers can see this ? after 3 desperately dry springs in a row i’m seriously about ready to give up trying to grow combinable crops on light land

OK let's bring in a few facts

“The amount of CO2 released by ploughing and cultivation during reseeding can be approximately three tonnes per hectare.

“When you look at it from a global level, you realise that 15-20 per cent of the CO2 in the world’s atmosphere comes from ploughing

a brown field ot like a piece of unpainted metal, unprotected and rusting (oxidising) away. As you point out as much as 3t:ha of carbon released when what we should be doing is sequestering that kind of qty each year instead ...... and being paid for this unique and valuable service only we can offer !

thats before the effects of unstable soils eroding and leaching nutrition is considered

crazy to even consider doing it in 2021 or that its still legal given the clear present state of our climate

surely only a lunatic would continue to damage their own environment ?
I regard ploughing a small % to reseed improving my environment and I see over thirty years my soils massive improvement , unlike yourself who wa only the other day saying you will have to change your farming methods as you can’t sustain it in this climate , but going by above graph the climate isn’t really changing at all, but you are right you will have to change your farming method as 100% arable is unsustainable in any climate raping the soil for prolonged periods is as bad as it gets for the environment .
