With wheat at below the cost of production for many at the moment is anyone thinking about dropping this treatment this year, or is it not worth dropping t0

Best not to think of T timings. If we get a long wet spring the theoretical programme for a fungicide junkie could be;

Winter/early spring rust/septoria
Leaf 4 traditional T0
Leaf 3 traditional T1
Leaf 2 T1.5
Flag traditional T2
Ear emergence Fusarium
Mid-late flowering final earwash

No, we will be applying something early.

Its the best chance to have a look around the farm after the winter.

I would expect the spray regime to be pretty much the same as last year - the vast majority of the money has been spent / committed to being spent by now.

Finding a lot of mildew and septoria in crops and now even finding slugs actively grazing wheat so the temperature needs to drop , but definitely wouldn't want to drop any fungicide applications only thing would be to shop around on prices for straights and generics rather than just follow what is advised straight away

T0 always gives a result here I leave an untreated bit at all stages just to see. From my experience more tonnes reduces costs. The hard and expensive work of getting the seed in the ground is done so why try and undo what you have already started. T0 costs say £15 (£1.30-£1.80/t) plus application and IME provides good long-term coverage and reduces costs at later stages.

Do you guys ever apply fungicide pre the winter ?..to help septoria etc...while you can't travel...

What's stages are crop ATM?

Ant..

No. If it came to that I'd stop growing wheat! To keep septoria out you'd be spraying every 3 weeks from November onwards - the crop just isn't worth it plus you wouldn't actually gain much. A cold weather period kills off the older diseased leaves anyway. Protecting the canopy starts at the end of tillering when you don't want the yield building leaves infected. As the stem extends if you can keep the new leaves protected the old ones die off naturally as they are shaded out. Keeping the plant clean from GS30 onwards is where your return on fungicide investment lies.

Ok...this is where I run into trouble..it doesn't get cold..and at the end of G32...I can't travel...by the time I can travel it's getting past the optimum time for first fungicide application and it's playing catch up...

I think I'm best to do an eyespot septoria target spray before the wet...at least it gets some protection during that period...especially for eyespot...

Exclusion from travelling will reduce after a few years of direct drilling...plus the improved drainage etc...

My crop never really stalls...it punches on all year...

Ant,.

You have different growing conditions to us in the UK. Travelling conditions usually get better as the growing season progresses, though that's not guaranteed. UK wheat does very little between October & March so minimal final impact is made on yield then unless it floods or slugs munch it.

If it stays mild then this Yellow rust in Lilli is going to need a T0 ,along with high Septoria pressure everywhere and some cyper is going to be needed as no bydv applications have been made other than seed treatments,

It does depend on what the weather has in store though..... IMAG1504.jpg

We've done work in the past on early September-sown Consort and even that didn't respond to an autumn or pre-T0 spray. Do you have Septoria nodorum or tritici? Here tritici is fairly slow growing so not difficult to keep on top of in early spring even if sprays are late.

I get nodorum and eyespot and that's it....I haven't had great years yet...but travelling at the right time is always an issue...I'm growing different variety next time...alot longer season wheat...I think this will solve some issues for me...

I thought it was just me! I have seen a lot of yellow rust in KWS Lili compared to other varieties with lower ratings. Has it broken down already or will we see an improvement later on?
