I will be honest, our parents always wanted us to farm and carry on the business. Any other jobs away from farming have been scoffed at and ridiculed a little bit. I had hopes and dreams but felt like I could never fulfill them, because I have to farm. I can understand it, but in the end its also kind of shitty to expect your kids to take over and do all of that. Dad said not long ago how he was sorry he dragged all us kids along the same path as him into farming, if it made us miserable, then when you do say how much you would actually like to do something else maybe, he takes that as how he's really offended. Mum is just downright offended if you make any other suggestion to doing anything other than farming. I love them, I do really, but there are times I want to smash my face into a wall. Still on the fence if it's what I want to do. Happen I'll give it a couple more years and see, if that

Just do what you want to do it’s your life , your parents will get over it, do not allow yourself to be pushed into something you don’t really want if you do you will end up despising your own parents, if they let you go you will love them more for it and you never know you might even want to come back to farming after a while and be a better farmer for it !

a bit of a late reply I know, however I think that if I choose to get out of farming then that is it for me. I am not going back. Most I will do is to maybe buy a smallholding and keep some animals just for me.

To be fair I think some of the can't spend time with the family, is down to the manic farmer syndrome, I'm no saint but always did the school run, go out etc and have a holiday away (mostly in winter) but the live sheep were still alive and the wet grass grew again, and I got to see my 3 grow up, now I have a friend who's kids are just about to fly and he just cannot see that yet another day at a show is fine, he has never been any where with them let alone gone on holiday, he once said oh we can't get away in the summer holidays as I have a cow calving every week, I pointed out that as he did the AI he had planned it!
