Will

You really must be joking. Under no circumstances should you choose a friend as a solicitor.

One of my better decisions. He coached and instructed me how to represent myself so that I said the right things to the right people at the right times.

I stayed out of jail and it only cost me a bottle of brandy and a box of beers. Saved myself a fortune!

...Why is this - it is because only the solicitor is an 'officer of the Court'. Absolute basis legal knowledge.

Even those solicitors who have never seen the inside of a Court room, should know this. How does a contract for a house sale get completed...

For a solicitor not to know this is unbelievable...

Chapter and verse, but I don't know if it's ignorance or failure of memory. The amusing thing is that my knowing this makes me the one in the wrong...:banghead:. I'm prepared to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, certainly I have occasionally come close to nearly forgetting something :angelic:.

We shouldn't allow Wally to goad beyond amusement or dictate. End of... :)

You have all made a Will, right?

After looking into various bits & bobs, I'm now closer to making a will.

I gather that, upon my physical demise and consequent transition to the afterlife, my private pension pot would not be automatically inherited by my spouse.

I would rather give my hard earned & saved cash to vegan activists than let the taxman have it, so I need to make a will instructing my pension pot to be inherited by my wife. :scratchhead:

I still own no property and have no human dependents.

A minor complication would be my guns & rifles. My father is the only relative who has guns, but he only has a SGC and is logically likely to expire before I do.

I could simply issue an instruction for them to be sold, or to be transferred/given to whoever of my friends my wife thinks most appropriate on the day?

One of my bosses had trained as a barrister. He once remarked, you should never ask a question unless you already know the answer. Rather a sweeping statement but I watched him trip people up with that one several times...and have used itmyself.

Wife and I did one last year along with Enduring power of attorney and it cost circa £2100 which was a bit of a shock. Just wish I could get the previous generation to do the same before it's too late..
I'm in a similar situation. Mine was done a month or so with a specialist will kind of bloke, I don't think he had much idea how farming works and he seemed a bit bemused when he left. Previous generation I am not so much worried about the will as the tax planning but am getting nowhere so just have to accept that the tax man will get a good pay day.

Why not? Did you not have to name a beneficiary when you set it up? Was about Number 2 on my forms after "Who I was" .

I found a link yesterday that said my wife would not automatically inherit my private pension pot when I die, due to intestacy rules. Can't find the damn link now!

I started my pension about ten years before I was married.

I've now been reminded that making a will was one of my NY resolutions, and the year is half gone.

Just heard an advert for "Farewill" who do online wills.

Has anybody done this?

It doesn't have to cost anything, just list of assets and who I want them to go to, with a named executor, signed and dated by me and a witness.

No need to involve a solicitor :scratchhead:

The farewill online one has a special offer down to £90 for a couple, with a £10/year fee to allow you to keep making adjustments over time.

Two copies, one in house, one in secure storage. Don't worry too much about it, by the time it comes in to use you'll be dead ;) unlike this thread, which seems to have a life of its own. Walter is still right too
