Well i did say id report cock ups. Ive been two simoned!

Spring barley drilled 10 days ago has hardly germinated. Field is a write off. Basically sprayed stubble which was.ungrazed winter barley stubble 18 days before. After drilling it pee'd down for 3 days and this has effected germination.

Another lesson in 2 simoning! Luckily it was just recleaned farm saved seed so hasnt cost a fortune. Ill probably redrill with spring beans as field really needed a break but could just as easily redrill with barley next week in dry conditions.

Perplexing as ever...
I thought you were drilling AS with the spring barley???

Had this happen last year after over wintered stubble wherever the swath had been the previous year as there were green lines of wheat volunteers. Where cover had been grazed bare by sheep there was no problem and identical glyphosate timing. Talked to @Richard III about this and I think the conclusion was that the volunteer wheat continues to pump out alleopathic chemicals after glyphosate is applied for some time and this affects the spring barley germination. I decided to use falcon on my covers and grazed them hard as a result this time but only sowed end of this week so not sure how it will go.

Actually this was volunteer winter barley but planted into spring barley. Probably be the same thing as wheat. Again where I flash graze stubbles even for just a week i dont seem to have the issues.

Will you get full benefit from that second time around?

Not really as its going to beans now. Are you trying to catch me out for sowing beans having applied N or are you asking whu hasnt the AS ameliorated the situation? If the latter then id say i was too soon drilling, too late spraying, let the cover get too tall and the rain hasnt helped but even then its a jigsaw and i dont have the answer really

I dont know. Next week ive got.more barley to do and if it stays dry i think it will be ok
Also your mzuri should move.more.soil so dissapate the problem.

Its a wierd phenomenon.

No l wasn't trying to catch you out as such, more that you said it had only cost you time and FSS and l was interested to see whether you thought you would retain benefit from AS. Not trying to pick holes in everything it's interesting what you do...

Yes i overlooked that. Yes it will have cost me 1t of AS as well. Maybe the sulphur may help the beans? Who knows?

I have some spare fss beans so ill use them and in a way its a blessing in disguise because this was a 3rd cereal. But im not very proud of myself!

I always say I can afford to make a few mistakes each year. Ive just made this same one again! I think i need to remember to write this down and note to self is : spray a bit earlier, sow a bit later and if its going to hammer down with rain dont sow! Will take some more pics on Monday

Not even chitted. Mostly. Except in the area which i sparayed in November which was a grassy patch round the headland. Seed seem to go all mushy and floury

That's what a lot of our 2nd wheat did. Some of it sort of germinated, but then sat there and did nothing. Also, had rain soonish afterwards. No cover though at that point, just lots of stubble residue.

Will, do you think you went a little early? I find that I only really get the right conditions around the 10th April onwards although this year I have gone a little earlier. I am further south than you. Do you normally get away with drilling so early? Or do you have to go when the soil is right for fear of a wet spring in your part of the world? I dont have enough data to show whether delayed drilling has any effect on yield.
