Wind at night and early morning?

Stupid question time. Why does the wind die down last thing at night and first thing in morning? Just been out with sprayer before it gets dark and will be out again at 4, was thinking what causes it.

Diurnal winds, in the eve it`s to do with an inversion forming (Due to rapid heat loss, no solar radiation) and the surface winds becoming decoupled with the winds above the inversion. The process then reverses in the morning, eg sun rises, causes heat to build which in turn breaks up the inversion, this in turn causes the surface wind to then mix with the winds above the inversion. Hope that makes sense??
Was out at 4 this morning too, stunning morning here, banks of mist floating around.

The wind is usually less right through the night as well as first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

It is more windy in the day as the sun transmits more energy to the earth which makes wind. (I Think)

As temperatures fall in the evening the lower layers on the atmopshere become more stable; temperatures fall and as MrNoo says an inversion forms (this is where temperatures rise with height instead of falling). I always imagine the 'surface' being lifted upwards a few 10's of feet (although it can be hundreds), and us lot at the surface then effectively being under a tent protected from the turbulent air above.
In the morning the tent has to come down as the air heats up. The inversion heats through and disappears and then the wind returns and then we are all back out in the elements again!
