Winter barley v spring barley

I picked £400 randomly but I know for sure spring barley around £300/acre so based it on that.

Winter barley a no brainer for us this year it did close to 4t/acre and 3.5 hesstons/acre. Spring barley struggling to hit 2t and less than 2 hesstons/acre.

That is a big difference, care to elaborate the costs a bit. I wouldn’t be fussed taking into account fuel at this stage but u it is a cost all the same

I like the idea of winter stuff as more opportunity to get it harvested in good weather rather than spring stuff which seems a salvage job at times if the weather is bad this time of year

Dont use a contractor for much so....
35 combine, 20 drill, 25 plough, 20 for cultivations, 5 rolling
I did forget fert/spray application cost tbh, and trailering?
2 passes for fert and 3 for spray maybe.

N is £300/t now. £50 won't buy you much.

Only got 300 acres to harvest here so never seen the point of winter barley myself.
With the exception of the drought year in 2018 spring malting barley has averaged 2.9t/acre for the past 7 or 8 years.

All depends on your system. Spread the harvest or spring workload , early entry for stubble turnips, grass or OSR then it’s a different story but the extra costs of growing it compared to yield benefit has never stacked up for me.

34.5% AN is now at close to £350/t ....... and rising. Urea, if you can get it, will be a very long way over £400.

2021, our GM for spring barley was £360, winter barley 380. That's higher than average, due to reasonable yields at a good price.

Depends on the season. Sometimes spring leaves highest margin, other times it's winter. Can't predict which, so decide on winter/spring based on soil type, rotation, early or spreading harvest, risk reduction etc.
