Winter barley varieties for 2021

Gimlet done very well here, massive amount of straw if that’s your thing. One patch did 7 x 120x90 475kg bales to the acre. We usually only get around 4.5-5 bales on other varieties. (Season made a difference maybe) other 2 patches did 6 bales to the acre. Not put grain over a weigh bridge but happy with the pile in the shed.
Ours isnt going to break any records after wet winter bare patches but it stood up pretty well, just necked over and didnt lose any heads on the ground

Anybody else struggling to get WB seed delivered this Autumn?
I’ve had 5 tons Sensation on order for delivery 1st September and they aren’t even answering the phone as to when we will get it!

Barley seed on farm, wheat seed cleaned and dressed this morning. BUT waiting for new oat seed ordered and agreed for delivery by 20th September. Latest “promise” is 7-8 October. They’re a bl**dy shower 😡😡😡😡

It’s like the seed merchants get caught out by the fact harvest and drilling are quite close together 🤦‍♂️
You’d think they realise that most of us like to drill our Winter barley before we drill our wheat.
“Plant your barley in the dust and your Wheat in the mud.”

And they will have had much longer to get it ready than wheat too!

Sometime I wonder WTF this country is coming to. Laziness and greed!

I ordered the seed through HLH Hutchinsons in May, but have no idea who the seed producer/supplier is.
Maybe it is time we name and shame these idiots.

I got asked to register and fill in some form regarding Sensation on line a few weeks ago, presumably by DSV.
I’m beginning to smell a rat!

Most of my land is now Direct drilled, which requires it to go in 2 weeks sooner than if it is conventionally drilled.
I’ve already had to switch putting my Bazooka into the land that is Direct drilled, meaning that all the Sensation will now have to go on the only fields I have ploughed. As most of this land hadn’t been ploughed for the previous 2 crops, hence theoretically the BG levels levels will have dropped to 9% (30% x 30% of the original BG level ploughed down last time), I’m tempted to tell them to shove the order and plant it with Home saved 2nd Wheat.
I usually use Winter Barley as a good tool in the fight against BG and it also helps to get in cleared early and get my DD’d Winter linseed planted in August. Maybe I don’t need to in this instance and should grow wheat instead anyway.
If I haven’t heard from them on Monday, this is exactly what I will do.

Sensation seed was delivered beginning of September, drilling it today. Doesn’t help you much though unfortunately.

"time is of the essence". Get it on the purchase order, and fix a date at the time of purchase.
That is exactly what I did. Ordered in May for delivery on 1st September.
It specifically says so on the purchase order.
However, it hasn’t made a sh!t’s worth of difference and it isn’t here.
On top of what he they now don’t want to give an actual delivery date.

I might be delaying payment if and when it does get here!

If you think this failure to honour a contract has caused you a loss you can demonstrate, feel free to go to the market to buy in some seed and sue for the difference.

Who's the supplier? I will avoid them in the future.

I’m always amazed that my barley seed crops aren’t collected for processing in July to get them through the plants before the seed companies get busy with wheat.
Oh, of course, it would mean them tying up some cash for a few weeks.

But surely the earlier they are delivered the earlier they can issue invoices and get paid.
