The challenge is to get them all in the combine

spring beans at 560g 100o seeds

30 plants per m with 5 pods 4 beans per pod 600 beans per m
6000000 beans per ha 3.36 tper ha
40% under the knife 2.02t/hectare

30*5*4*10000*560/1000*0.6= 2.02 t/ha

edit (our result 2006).

My agronomist has just sent a rec for Bean rust, 0.5 of teb.... Is it worth going through them again now?
Only had one fungicide so far as they aren’t the best looking crop of beans but got a decent amount of pods on them.

Should I bother...?

I'm not.
But I'd be going for a look and assessing the crop and how bad it is.
Mine are beginning to senesce now, not through disease . Naturally.

This season has exposed lots of agronomists

Many are still producing recommendations based on a book they were given at a meeting in February

Fungicides at best delay crop death by a month giving a months more photosynthesis and higher yields

This year the drought means most crops will die a month or so early

The benefits of any fungicide this year are marginal at best

The benefits of fungicide applied now are likely to be nil

The only input in my beans this year has been seed (farm saved)

Nothing else would have given a MOIC

You are right though a lot of agronomy is based on what they have committed to and therfore have to recommend and move at any cost

Total waste of money most likely

Do you mean you never sprayed them for weeds??

If so you must be allowing grass weeds to seed which can only be a bad move

No - apart from glyphosate at establishment , not used an incrop herbicide in beans for 3 or 4 years now, they are all only marginally better than water ime and a zerotill crop doesn’t get the same pressure due to lower disturbance at establishment

You weren't very happy with the crops potential earlier this year though.
Did they pick up? Or struggled all season?

Clive of course doesn't have BG

If you did, some level of herbicide would be essential, DD or not...

What herbicides actualy work in beans ? Kerb on winters I guess if you have a grass weed issue but what is any better than water on springs these days ?

Kerb and crawler can be used in winters for bg.
Nirvana clomate for pre em blw
Then leave well alone.
Haven't had enough blw to warrant bentazone this year.
Not enough bg to warrant the crawler either.
Couple fungs, no insectides.
Happy enough so far
Going to try the gd this year see if this nirvana of zero till, zero input beans is possible.
One tramline only though this season

if it dosnt rain then no need for bean rust control
looking at weather forecast non for 2 weeks at least

I had a bit of charlock in spring beans that has been decimated by the pollen beatles
bentazone going back
no till later planted spring beans 60 seeds or more will produce a weed free crop just need to control the grass weeds woats and bromes especially often grow in the line disturbed by the drill
the longer the notill the easier and better the beans are

To be fair even though they are dying early I am looking forward to combining them more than most of my crops which isn’t saying much

Same here, Flat 10.

Only crop with any bulk at all, this time.

Here, they've responded to the drought by aborting individual pods, and many individual beans within other pods.

So, still looks like a reasonable yield, albeit much less than it might have been, and reasonable quality.
