Hate getting machines wet and normally blow down and spray oil and diesel on shiny bits. But washed the mower this year because we used it to top a few fields and it got dirty with cow muck I ran it for an hour in the sun and sprayed diesel all over it, it looks new but can't help thinking it will have a negative on bearings etc and think if I did it every year it would soon look taty

As title says, primarily hay/forage kit. Mowers, tedders, rakes, balers, etc.

Do you wash, grease and put away at end of season for the winter, or put it away as they finish, then wash and grease at the start of the next season?

As I see a lot of both so wondered what the advantages are of both?

Mines still as it is as I haven't had time to do it yet, but I think I do swing towards wash off and grease and put away, then give it a sprinkle off and a little grease at the start of next season.

Thanks all.

Now please don't think bad of me .......

I know the plumbing gets pretty manic.....

Lol, I don't mind, and yes the plumbing is manic, currently trying to drill winter wheat and barley, fit a bathroom for a pregnant couple who want to move in next weekend, start a boiler instal on Tuesday as they have no heat and hot water and half way through connecting up a Farm 2000 big beastie in a big ol house just down the road, and yes the combine still needs to be cleaned out. :arghh:

We put away a wagon last week after 6 hrs washing and removing grass and muck , the knife bank is the most important area to clean as what builds up here turned to muck and rots everything around it , we wash it out every 3 weeks during the season as well . Same with the mowers keep them washed during the season as crap turns to muck and causes rust , this crap won't dry clean . Power hose is the only way.

Everything of mine lives indoors, even the rolls.washed plough down earlier in the week and scrubbed it with detergent.looks like new even though its 9.cant afford to leave stuff outside even though lots of people do.sun bkeaches the paint especially if its red like massey tractors or vaderstad stuff which goes pink.

I heard one old boy say to another at a sale 'never buy a washed baler'. The old man was a skint idiot.

Water itself is not corrosive. Washing does nothing but good - just make sure it dries afterwards. Give it a good grease and spray with oil and put it to bed.
Tbh tho out baler has had a lot less bearing trouble since we stopped washing it, we used to wash it, run it and spray with oil but now it gets blown off and not power washed, I allways power wash the mower and spray with oil along with slurry tanker silage trailer and everything else

One problem for us in the North is this suggestion of leaving machines out in the Sun to dry. Combine was washed in the rain yesterday and its still raining today:banghead:

ps blowing it down would do much good cause its been outside since we started cutting at the beginning of August. Going to move some wheat and make a space for it this afternoon.
