Winter Wheat & Barley Wholecrop

Do the above make good wholecrop silage? Do people use fertiliser, fungicides etc as per a crop taken through to combining? We’ve just taken on some ground with 50acres of each and trying to consider best options for them, as had to buy the growing crop.

Within normal range.
Value in WC Wheat is the energy / starch.
Dairy Cows, we feed it with "rocket fuel " grass silage & it works very well
Roughly 70% silage, 30% WC wheat
All depends what you are feeding

i`m not an expert on feeding beef cattle. It will probably be a good base feed but will need an extra source of protein ?

Given forward cereal prices, can you not take it through to combining, or sell the standing crop for someone else to combine? Surely plenty of willing buyers in your area with combines.

But yes, grow it properly, as you would a grain crop anyway.

I like the idea of selling a standing crop. Was asking about wholecrop as whilst grain prices are high, so surely will be cattle feed so silaging it may suit.

That would be a long haul with the silage trailers…

I’m sure there will be plenty of neighbours that would take care of it for you, or approach local agent to find someone to buy the standing crop as it is now, for them to grow it on?
