Winter

Rowan berries like I've never seen, groaning with them. I think we will have snow next month (possibly this month) and a long winter. Just wish I had more storage space to store the hay, as it is I have to buy some in later in the winter.

Winters like this make me glad I have tough little Shetlands and tough big Herdwicks and not too many of either!

I fully expect winters to be harder on average over the next couple of decades, due to the Grand Solar Minimum we are currently entering. The full effects of the Minimum on the UK's climate will be tempered by the state of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation - its currently generally positive, but if it turns negative (as it was from about 1960-1995) we could expect colder winters, but drier warmer summers, like the 60s and 70s I guess.

Bring it on!!!!!! Better than a wet summer and winter.

Sorry folks, a but late coming in on this one.

What I show is what models are saying at any point. Hopefully there are times when longer range models are in agreement and we can lean into a particular theme. So, for example, they have been clustering around the idea of January being dominated by a stronger SW'ly which would indicate stronger winds, more unsettled weather, but also milder overall (although that does not completely rule out any cold weather).

February has been hinted as having higher pressure, so possibly colder.

My gut feeling (and it isn't any more than that) for this winter is not as cold as the last one, and probably not particularly remarkable. There will be some snow, but again, nothing out of the ordinary.

It's good fun to have a go though, and to try and explain why it goes wrong!
