@TFF News would it be possible to blog some of the IFJ 'Farmer writes' articles as they become available. Interesting to read other viewpoints - was beginning to think that the WMN was the only regional paper printing interesting farming articles/viewpoints:D:whistle:

Do people not say the same every year? How the hell are store buyers going to make a profit buying them at that price?

They made alot of money Last year. this time last year was no grass as may was so cold. Low feed stocks because of 2012. Stores were cheap then fat price rose to£4.20 kg. Feed barley was £120 /t.

you living in a different world then the eu suggest something it gets watered down and passed then the uk get hold of it gold plates it and adds a bit more red tape for luck and to keep the massive industry its created in work

Absolute crap. The french are anal about red tape. They may protest a bit more loudly but still abide by the rules. Go to any continental supermarket look at the beef and you will see a number. In the cabinet somewhere reachable is a sheet that cross references that number to give details of animal such as parents, farmer, breed, abbatoir, DOB, DOS, carcass weight and conformation. Hmm not much of that at Sainsburys. Talk about tracability.

Whilst the supermarkets might be placing pressure on the processors as well as the producers, something tells me Mr Goodman is still laughing all the way to the bank as farmers place the blame squarely on said supermarkets.....

I think I can see the problem!
at last so you agree that traceability is not very good with all the food scandals in the last year it just goes to show that you can't believe all thats printed or not on a packet ann to trust all that you read is a fools errand the traceability that you hold so dear is only as good as the people in the chain and you're placing your trust on their honesty

Can anyone say what effect the (relative) strength of Sterling is having on beef prices? And lamb prospects?

At least UK interest rates are in no danger of rising in the medium term...
Sucks in imports and depresses exports... new season lamb is down £10/ head on last year... fat cattle... well they are getting on for £200/250 head ( and that looks likely to get worse ) down on last year...

spot on reply goth but lamb job will probably get worse as no 5th quarter going to china and lamb skins worth £5 less

One of the issues is that there are just too many supermarkets. Two new ones have been built less than half a mile from my house in the last year. I questioned the planning committee about how they were expected to be viable when we already had 4 large supermarkets and 6 small ones within a two mile radius. There is only so much business to go around and you can't win it all by discounting. The latest one has cut its staff by half since it opened and now is slashing prices to stay in business. I'm no economist, but it was obvious what was going to happen before they even laid a brick on the site.

In relative terms, where the EU beef price is pretty much matches the where the English price is and the two have been tracking each other for a number of years. And the Scottish differential is still the same too.

So really the problem is Europe wide. But how are you supposed to influence that.......
