WN Lindsay sold to Simpsons Malt

I've done a reduced tonnage with them to what I did with Lindsay's. Only 1 year contract. You only shaft farmers once. We've got good memories.

Always had a good relationship with WN lindsay. Never had a load rejected by them. We have good rep from the Keith store. Who I have a lot of time for.

Looks like malting barley going to be in demand this harvest. Be interesting to see what weather holds for us.

I can't see Simpson's being that enamoured with the deal. They have lost a considerable tonnage since acquiring Lindsay's. From companies/rivals who WN lindsay supplied and refuse to deal with Simpson's.
Is that the quartile deal . Looks like it's a 4 way split . 25% at 170 , 25% 150 , 25% spot and 25 at a quartile linked price to spot .

There is no justification on the grounds of 'traceability'- whoever told you that is fabricating the truth quite frankly. There are plenty of genuine sources for malting barley seed and all of them will be above board because seed in general is a tightly regulated business. That said, there is absolutely nothing to prevent a farmer from saving his own seed and using it to grow a particular variety of malting barley. In fact, given that the farmer will know the cleanliness and provenance of the stuff you could say he has a better chance of controlling or ensuring it's quality than anyone.
Traceability is what I was told by the merchant, yes its always to do with getting more money from us farmers, but that is the spiel they are using. At present it does not affect me as I am buying elsewhere. When they eventually come at me for seed, Fert and even pesticide's, I will happily ask them to enter a shared contract plan to equally take the farming risk or go to a different merchant.

The same barley went for malting at 98% at harvest. Not sure why it’s deteriorated this year so much.

I don't grow malting where I am now. These were just farm saved seed tests done in a lab. Not the quick tetrazolium ones either. I've had the same for malting - no claims on malting yet the batch of FSS I kept back was sub 96%. Better than than the other way around!

Apologies if mentioned elsewhere on here already but heard today that Inglis grain merchants gone bust.
Even less options for Scottish malting barley growers it would seem.

What a change a year can make to Simpsons attitude to Barley producers in Angus.
80% at £20 over wheat at time of setting to Nov futures, 20% at the mysterious spot price.
None of their chat about seed etc being bought from them they they thought they could push last year.
Cefetra offering similar terms.
With the volatility in futures prices and prospect of more if Odessa gets attacked who knows where this will be, not even a hint of weather market yet.

Had oat contract with WNL then Simpsons last year. Rep jumped ship from them recently so a few weeks ago had a phone call from man that's taken on our account asking about contracts for this year. told him i hadn't made my mind up what i was doing about them this year as oat contracts are now wanting Leaf membership. Last week a signed by them contract came through the post for this years oats. Think a few words of advice may have to be said to this new rep!! Cheeky bu**ers.

It's a different contract.

It's the quartile one you have to buy seed for.
