'Wokeness'

Awful use of the language though it is, this is now a buzzword; I guess that some would regard being called 'woke' a compliment, others a dire insult. Regardless of one's opinion on that, it is now a real thing and its political doctrine of intolerance - very closely entwined with 'identity politics' - has had and is having an effect here in the UK and elsewhere.

It seems that anything considered by them to be 'racist' and related to white men is, currently, a legitimate target for being erased from history. Well, extremists of all sorts have always sought to wipe out the existence and memory of things they don't like, often with violence if they think it necessary - and something that they can get away with.

Statues have been the latest targets. I have a question: what's next? What, for the 'woke', will be the next legitimate targets for condemnation and removal? Will it be paintings, will it be songs, will it be books?!

The very thought of these things being selectively proscribed, by the the self-appointed enlightened ones, both angers and scares the hell out of me. The 'woke' seem to be very, in fact emphatically definite in their choice of what to be offended by and intolerant of, so far. But they aren't a structured organisation with a defined leadership that can be, or at least try to be, reasoned with... it's a case of the mob dictating the policy and all must follow; there is no clear plan by which we can follow their intended course.

Yet 'wokeness' has been more or less entirely about race, so far. It seems reasonable to presume that as soon as they think they have exhausted that source of offence they will look for others, and sexism, 'sexuality' and disability discrimination etc. are the obvious contenders for their attention.

Well, if these presumptions are correct - and, if not probable, they are at least plausible - and they do turn their eyes to literature, music and art, well, then everything from the Bible to Shakespeare, Ice-T to Wagner and Rembrandt to Van Gogh will be at risk of being removed, if they can do it - which, with a fair amount of political cowardice around the world, they may have a fair crack at and a fair chance of, if they are allowed to start.

But I'll be surprised if they have a go at the Koran - they may be idiots, but they're not stupid...

I see Starkey is in trouble for his interview. I must say he is a plonker for using the language he did when many of his thoughts were reasonable, but the reaction is predictable with outbursts of holier than thou righteousness from the BBC and Guardian.

Extreme Islam is the thing to be worried about. No one dare say anything about it,unless its dressed up as "terrorism",for fear of indiscriminately getting your head chopped off.Presumably why we dont often hear much from law abiding moderate muslims after atrocities happen.

You make a good point, but I think that such extremists are far less pervasive and far easier to combat than the 'woke'. Not least because of their murderous tendencies, these leaving the rest of us with no alternative but to see an end of them.

As you know I'm a rational atheist, so all religion is merely delusion of choice to me; however, there is no denying that a lot of the religious are good and decent people, Muslims included. The problem is, the Koran doesn't allow for any watering-down, and it prescribes that to reject part is to reject all, i.e. apostasy, and the penalty for apostasy within Islam is... :(

Sports teams have now come under attack for their names now, Exeter rugby club for being called the chiefs as it is offensive to native Americans, also Washington Redskins for the same reason

If the Redskins change their name (its currently under review) then I'm guessing the Kansas City Chiefs will have to as well.
I mentioned in another thread the Kiwi rugby team being The All Blacks. The soccer team are the All Whites. Which one will come under attack first?
Come to think of it most of the Kiwi teams are known as Black something.
There maybe trouble ahead.

Or, how about thinking of 'woke' as describing not acting like a total bigot and perhaps having a little empathy for other people. Interesting that use of 'they' suggesting only other people.
'X's wife just died of cancer, so maybe go a bit easy on him'. Response, 'don't be such an effin snowflake, tell him to man up.'

I recall some heartstring tugging reporting on BBC of farming families during F&M having their herds destroyed. Your approach would suggest we call them 'effin wimps'.

Wokeflakes.

Someone posted a clip on here a few days ago of " It ain't half hot mum ". Hard to believe this was broadcast primetime on the BBC only 40 years ago with no complaints. Just enjoyed for the light hearted comedy that it was. We really have lost the plot.
You can watch 'Love thy neighbour' on Youtube.

Gobsmacking.

When did "I think" become "I feel"? Why are your feelings more important than the facts? When you jump on a bandwagon, do you check first whether the wheels are round?
How much is fear and ignorance, or just wanting to be part of "something"?
To whom is this question directed?
