@Woldgrain Storage I am not in this business do excuse my ignorance. On some american youtube video's farmers tend to have one very high vertical elevator (a leg they call it) that is in between at the silos from which there are tubes going down to each silo. How do these silo's get filled and do you know why you have other methods?

Is it 5000t each they hold?

What height is the corrugated edges?

16m I think.

I'm expecting they will end up being the same height as the others around them.

They will be a ring higher than the biggest ones we already have, which will make them 7200m3, so a smidge under 5,500mt at 76 kg/hl

I'll get some more photos on Friday, weather permitting.

In US/Canada, silos are often away from other farm buildings, nearer to the crop, and are filled by a tractor powered auger or a sucker/blower.

Ours will be filled by a conveyor, from an elevator. The elevator is linked to the rest of our store, so the two new silos can be filled from our intake pits, from our cleaners, from our colour sorter or from another silo.

The elevator will have a valve to send grain to an outloading spout or to the conveyor above the two silos.

The elevator will sit on the pad, the three black blobs are cables coming up through the concrete. I will get a close up photo next time I'm in the yard.

All will become clear in the fullness of time (the next 3-5 days).

I'll try not to melt Clive's swear filter while I explain.

Oh. Two theories:

Whining locals? Tbh the locals are pretty likely to steal the bins over a weekend. Maybe anti theft paint?

It's actually some kind of wrap, which will be removed to reveal a gaudy sponsorship message from someone we hate? Maybe a picture of the entire RT board telling us we've never had it so good? And on the reverse you can see their backs, with daggers in them?

Oh.

Whining locals?

Bingo.

Those of you who have looked at our store on google earth will see that we have 58 silos. These are of various heights, diameters and ages.

All of them are plain galvanised, with no paint or coating of any kind.

For the latest expansion the local parish council specified that the new silos be coloured to blend in. There was no mention of what colour, or what the silos had to blend in with (obviously not the other 58 silos).

There is obviously more to it, but this is a public forum.

We put together a few various suggestions with the help of an architect, so the council's planning officer could help us choose a scheme that fit with the wording (and the 'spirit') of the PC's condition.

The solution we agreed on was a graduated banding, darker at the bases and paler at the top, so from a distance the new silos will theoretically look like trees.

Lol. Will blend in well with the ad plant domes and the massive ww2 plane hangars then. Strange that wldc agreed with the pc. Food enterprise zone now innit.

I've never understood the attraction of very tall elevators and screw conveyors in the USA. Possibly its because they could have a tractor drive the one elevator leg and then everything else moves by gravity. Here we usually have height restrictions which limit how tall elevators can be. Those super tall elevators must be awful to service and when the ducting down to the bins wears out its a major job to change it. The augers and screw conveyors that several US companies have sold over here are constantly wearing out flights and thrust bearings so IMHO, they are cheap to buy for a reason, because they cost a fortune to run and maintain.

Yes, if a big elevator needs a motor/gearbox changing, or the belt needs to come out, you need a serious crane.

We try to have screw augers much bigger than necessary, so they run at lower speeds rather than flat out.

out of interest, whats the average distance to end user from your store? would you not have been better investing/building/stealing space nearer a ship/port/ ethanol plant/feed mill ?

That's a good question.

The grain & oilseed we store ends up all over the country, depending on the year. The merchants arrange all the outloading haulage, volumes and timings.

All the feed wheat/barley tends to head North & West (unless there is an exportable surplus). Milling wheat tends to go to the Midlands or Manchester. Oilseed goes to any of the 4 crushes (or to a boat). Oats & beans go anywhere.

would you not have been better investing/building/stealing space nearer a ship/port/ ethanol plant/feed mill ?

We are within 60 miles of 6 ports (Hull, Immingham, Grimsby, Goole, New Holland & Boston). We also have Hull crush, Vivergo, Flixborough, Sherburn, Selby, Whitley Bridge and 3 or 4 smaller mills within a similar distance.

We are 40 minutes from the M62, for access to Manchester (Allied Mills & Trafford Park) and Liverpool (crush).

You would be hard pressed to find a location within an arable area that is local (an hour or less) to a choice of ports, a crush, a bioethanol plant, a choice of feed mills and a choice of flour mills.
