Wood burner recommendations.

Having bit of an issue with our log burner lately, lots of dryish crunchy soot coming back down chimney every time liner expands with heat. It’s not really like creosote but more like cornflakes that crumble between your fingers. It just sits on top of baffle plate, it won’t burn therefore I’m leaning towards that it’s not a candidate for a fire.

Regular sweep won’t get here for nearly three weeks, any one found anything similar? We’re not burning damp wood, it’s seasoned oak been cut years ago and never let it slumber, was sweept early October, fire going every evening and mid afternoon onwards on weekends, open it out before going to bed. Glass keeps itself clean as we never shut it down too much.
is the flue isulated?

We had a flue fitted down a chimney whilst had scaffolding up for roof repair, anyway long story short it’s been fitted wrong way up. Guy who spotted it said we would get soot and carbon falling back into the burner.

I get similar in mine but not much of it.
I sweep my own chimney, how come you don't?
When I sweep it there isn't much coming down, difficult to measure but 2 litres of it absolute maximum and probably more like 1 litre.

No but i was concrete lined about twenty years ago then just a liner was dropped down when stove was fitted. It coukd easily be the problem as a friend has two stoves, one in a chimney and one in a very tall large room with pipe inside all the way to ridge. That one is always clean but other one gets a lot of stuff out when swept.

I hope not as was fitted by experienced fitters, it’s only doing it this year really. 4 th season since fittting, could I check any way?

Well yes, it’s getting tempting to buy a set for job now. I remove baffle every weekend and there was at least a good mug full on top of it yesterday

Think about the size of logs you can get onto it.
The longer the logs the less work there is involved in sawing etc…
Also a decent gap depth wise for loading it…nothing worse than trying to fiddle a log in beside an already hot fire.

I'm with you. Wouldn't touch a morso again.
Ours is a Morso, nothing wrong with it really. What put you off?

Only went for one due to that what the installer supplies and olny sells. All other installers that came to quote were just to willy nilly with what to do and how. They came, the older chap took one look and said straight away you need so and so cowling as it’s exposed, so and so liner, and only a stove that will shut right down incase wind picks up suddenly. Oh, and by the way you should really have a look at your other chimney, the cowling and pot don’t look too well. We’ll sort that for you when we’re up there!!!

My brother is a professional Chimney sweep. He uses a power brush and rods which cost over 2000 pounds. He said it’s the only way to clean a flue properly. You won’t believe how much soot comes out with first sweeping by a power brush! Draining rods and brush just won’t shift soot. Also use clean dry wood.

Got the pro in here this year cos I never get round to it. Into the 5th winter this year and its not been done before. He got about a pint jug full out - with power brush.
Guess the Lohberger burns pretty clean.
