Wood Chip or Logs for Biomass Boiler?

I'm looking at installing a large biomass boiler for drying firewood or wood chip.

I'm currently considering either a Heateco 998Kw wood chip fuelled boiler or a similar sized Unical log fuelled boiler.

I've had a few quotes from others (Froling, Binder etc.) but they seem to be a heck of a lot more money.

I realise that wood chip will negate the need for constantly feeding the boiler. However, I only intend running it when we are around during the day and able to move wood in and out of the drying area. I also have a large area of woodland to clear and thought it might be easier to cut it into long lengths (whatever will fit in the burner really) rather than chipping it.

Has anyone got any comments on the pros and cons of each system?

Also, is anyone running a Heateco of a Unical boiler and if so what is your experience of it?

Thanks.

Thats gonna be one hell of a lot of work to keep filling a mw boiler with logs. Chip system will be so much easier and less work.
Have you considered a biomass chp system?

We aren't big users of electricity and I had a quote of £20k plus to connect us to 3 phase so I ruled out chp for that reason along with it being quite expensive and complicated for a Thicko like me!

That is because Froling or Herz are much more boiler and will last out the 20 year of RHI, there are cheap and cheerful or things that work.

Austrian boilers have been through all the trouble shooting over the years and they have mastered how to make good boilers, we cover Binder, Herz, Froling, Hargassner & Eta. You get what you pay for in my opinion. We're away to do a 450 cascade on Hargassner then a 995 Herz, both for drying facility.

I've had a quote of £155k for a 990kw Binder with chip hopper etc.
Is that a good deal in your opinion? I just thought it seemed expensive compared to the Heateco.

Why??

Are you just keen on milking the RHI system or do you actually dry a serious volume of logs and woodchip. For a system that size i would be looking to dry in excess of 10,000 tonnes of wood and woodchip per annum.

We sell logs and firewood and its easier to sell if it's dry. Obviously the rhi is an incentive too.

Always seems stupid to me burning logs to dry logs when you can do exactly the same using a solar kiln. Just means you have to work so much harder cutting a third more timber just to end up with the same amount of saleable timber at the same moisture content. Certainly a solar kiln works for us.

Is there a Rhi payment on a solar kin?
