Wood gasification boilers

I would like to know of anyone has any experience of these, got a house on the farm that needs it heating system updated, don't want to do the pellet boiler route and with no mains gas it would mean putting a tank in for gas or oil, it's currently heated by modern electric convection radiators which are efficient but electric is not getting any cheaper ! The house is well insulated, double glazed modern house. Would there be any grants or scheme's that could part fund this sort of thing ? I have a good continuos supply of dry wood to feed it ! Any feedback would be good !

there are log boilers that comply with rhi regs that are not too expensive, it depends on your circumstances, the eco angus range is not too expensive and you can get them direct from the factory in poland, if you have access to a lot of logs you might consider a chip boiler, and get a chipper in monthly, the problem with a log boiler is someone has to keep feeding it.

Had a 50kw eta for a few years now, been totally reliable so far. Very efficient, a little barrow full of logs heats a biggish four bed roomed farm house for a day easily.

Anyone got any info on the log boilers that are suitable for the rhi scheme, and would it produce enough money over the scheme to pay for its installation ?

I doubt that the Rhi scheme would make sense as it would be a domestic system if heating only 1 house also by doing it outside the scheme you escape the regulations and can burn any wood (waste or self felled)or even coal. As you are outside the Rhi scheme you could use your own tradesmen not mcs registered ones which will lower the cost.
Try looking on kotly.com about 1/2 the price of ecoangus for the same kit

What would a rough installation cost be for one of these types of boilers ? Could it be done by a competent amateur ? Looking online I could get boiler, tank and valves for around £2500, would just need radiators and pipework after that ! My idea is that it would only be used in the winter months as I have solar panels (electric) that produce enough to run my megaflo hot water tank in the summer when I don't need heating and could join into my existing hot water system !

it is not too difficult to get an installation to comply with commercial rhi regs, you need a hot water tank located in an out building somewhere for feeding calves/lambs etc, and if the boiler is more than 70kw mcs does not apply

Downside to a gasification boiler is it takes time to get going normally, before diverting flames downwards thru gasification chamber.
So you need to load it, light it, wait to get up to a temp, then check it's gasification ok.
You get into a routine with experience, but you need to have time!

How long do you need to spend "tending " to it.
Would it amount to 15,30,45,60 mins per burn.
This time tending could add up financially as a right nightmare for anyone that is flat out as it is.

I should add; i bought a branchlogger an urban tr75 and it would be nice if there was a boiler that could take the small logs in an automated system.

Set it going, get your breakfast, pull the gasification lever and go to work you don’t need to sit with it till it goes you will spend more time cutting and splitting logs so the longer the log it takes the quicker it will be put in a large accumulation tank and in summer you may only need a burn every 3-4 days if you are going the eco Angus (Orlan) boiler avoid the 80 kw 96 and 130 kw ones are great the 80 does not seem to draw and get going as well as the others

one of my customers has a unical 150kw gasification type log boiler, it takes 1M lengths of wood, where as the eco angus is a pressure ventilator type this one is a vacuum ventilator type. (the eco angus has air fans on the front forcing air through the boiler, the unical has a large id fan on the back sucking air through the boiler same as froling, ETA,) it appears to do what it is supposed to, but like most of the log boilers that do not have lambda control you need to clean out the heat exchanger more often.
