Work wear/boots

By far the best boots are Redback. My pair have lasted 10 years and only just starting to fail.

I don’t know how anyone can get 10 years out of a pair of work boots, unless you are only wearing them occasionally

in over 35 years of buying boots of a range of brands, Blundstones, Victor, Oliver’s, Steel Blue, Red Wings ( US brand, NOT to be confused with Red Backs ), Mack, Caterpillar, even a couple of pairs of ex Army boots - the max I have ever gotten out of a pair of boots worn every day is about 3 years ( my last pair of Oliver AT’s ). I don’t look after the leather uppers or bother cleaning them, as it is ALWAYS the soles that fail first on them. Every brand I’ve ever had, constant daily wear, the soles go first.

the only boots that have lasted longer than that are leather soled dress boots - a pair of RM Williams that have been resoled about 4 times that are about 35 years old & a pair of US made Justin high top cowboy boots ( on their 3rd sole ) that are over 25 years old . . .

by the very nature of the environment & constant wear that work boots are exposed to, I budget on about 2 years to a pair. Anything more is a bonus. Been the same since I started buying them & work boot soles, design & technology has changed a lot since then. The hard rubber soles on Blundstones 30 years ago didn’t last any longer than the cork / rubber composite sole on Red Wing Roping boots 20 years ago or the vastly more comfortable Oliver’s of today . . .

I’m a big fan of buckler work boots but 18 months is about the life of them.the fronts wear out above the steel toe caps and soles eventually separate but I live in them including working in muddy trenches and wet aswell as dry conditions so I’m not too concerned.there are often offers or clearances in builders merchants.ive had £40 pairs of work trousers for as little as £6.i think you will allways get what you pay for in life

Diversified arable so not always out in fields, never been anywhere near livestock. No longer work weekends generally unless it’s harvest and through the winter probably a 3 day week, so no not 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. Saying that why anybody would want to work those hours I’ve no idea.

Haha - im only a part time arable farmer on just 800ha , so I work the minimum hours I can :)

I find hard / rough / dry surfaces are what wears soles more than anything - we probably have a lot more of that than you. Probably why our uppers never fail either :)
however, I still wear my work boots 7 days a week as they are my default footwear.
the only time I wear anything else on my feet is dress boots for “best” or trainers / joggers if I’m actually training / jogging

my work boots are the most comfortable footwear so they are also my “casual” wear, my walking boots etc etc

I wear eBay army surplus desert socks through the year as my feet get too hot in anything else and start growing fungus.

Lowa Patrol boots in the winter, non GTX as again it makes my feet sweat.
Army desert boots in the summer.
Never liked Bucklers, too soft a leather that cuts and tears.

Carharrt straight fit, rugged flex, cotton duck pants (trousers) . They only have one small pocket on the sides of each leg to hold for example a pencil, ruler or torpedo level. Oh and a hammer loop which I use in emergencies. Anything else I might need is carried on a tool belt. I can't wear trousers with dozens of pockets now, all OTT.

Hope this is in the right section. Need to buy myself a few bits before the coming season starts. I don't actually own any work boots and my old ones were well past their best years ago and weren't replaced. Also I am looking for a sensible pair of work trousers as I've never found jeans that comfortable for being sat down in all day.

Does anyone know if scruffs work trousers any good?

What about boots? Ambler lace ups, anyone got anything by Engelbert Strauss? I don't like dealer boots much and certainly don't like the look of red backs if I am honest. Only driving a tractor so don't need knee high S5 chainsaw resistant things. Uvex boots? Something lightweight would be good. Normally wear wellies for anything real wet and sloppy.

Also, decent brand of bib and brace overalls? I've always found them more comfortable than regular overalls for the morning grease up etc, throw them behind the seat after that.

Thank you in advance. Hastag- allthegearnoidea. Functional and easy to clean gear preferred- leave the lifestyle influencers to their bailiwick.

"The coming season"? That would be summer surely, You'll be needing shorts not trousers?(y)

I find boots clumsy heavy things for sitting in all day.

My tractor shoes of choice happened by accident, a pair of 5ten Freerider MTB trainers from my biking days. Very very durable, and as comfortable as normal trainers on your feet.

I tend to wear lace up boots, last pair was Ambler and just brought another pair, they seem really good.
Don’t rate Strauss stuff very highly, the trousers seem to be made of stuff that gives no resistance to welding sparks and make you sweat in summer.
I tend to work in Cofra Innsbruck jeans - very hard wearing and cheap - but you will need to alter the legs, they come in all kinds of lengths, in fact some pairs the length varies 2” between the left and right leg!

Thought you were training to be a doctor? The pockets would be handy to put your stethoscope and thermometer in I guess.

I have been rejected the first time around and it looks like I will have to go to college again yet again so will be working for the next 18 months at least. Kind of kicked me in the guts if I am honest but there is nothing I can do about it. I can't sit at home doing nothing until applying again.

Sorry to resurrect thread, which model bib and brace do you have from Strauss? Been looking at Carhartt etc but not sure they will be up to farm use...?
Just buy a couple claas boilersuits. There really hard wearing.

Go to dealers and try them on first. Wear shorts and t shirt underneath if worried about heat.

Sorry to hear that Ollie, better luck next time (and less buggering about on here!)
Carharrt and plenty good enough for farm use.
