Would dutch openers drill into an established grass ley?

Not sure if this is of interest, first one is straight into 5 year old pasture with the front legs in and using the 1 inch seeding boot, this is maize for game cover going in. Second is wheat straight into 3 year ley with the 5 inch seeding boot. I planned on putting my beans straight into my 3 year ley this year and I could have shown that but can’t see it happening! ?

The main drill hopper. I put the rape seed through a Stocks rotor meter at the back down into the airstream. I'll never do that again either - the DAP caused havoc with the Agtron blockage sensors on the distributor head by causing corrosion in the plugs. We couldn't use it for the next year properly & had to change 3 sensors that constantly played up.

Sorry - I've monopolised another thread!

@HarryB97 - a Claydon will do the job. @dirty harry is better placed to comment on what the Sprinter will drill into though he uses Dutch coulters IIRC. I can't readily think of anyone else using Metcalfs into turf.

We have a Claydon with the sulky hopper, and I’m hearing great reports of DAP sown with osr, would it go through our drill if I was to do similar to you and use a stocks seeder to drop on top of the bands, and what rate of DAP did you apply?

Very nice finish looks like it'll work well

Yes, the maize was for a neighbour and apparently it was an excellent bit of cover, the sheep stayed out there for another few days after that photo and then he sprayed it off. The wheat yielded fine but did look a mess, I’d rather the beans then wheat route now, like you are saying. Frustrating not to be able to this year yet, that field has puddles in it today so will need a few days!!!! (Weeks!)

Looks a decent job Simon, did you retrofit the air bleeds to help the coulters breathe when deep drilling?

No, they come as standard. Don't know how it would work without them. I had a couple of coulters block when I started which was obvious by seeing bean seed on the surface which came out of the bleeds.

I love the way this drill sticks to the depth I set it. Put it to 5 inches and that is where the seed goes, consistently over the whole field.
