This is exactly the point. A £100,000 elec car isn’t saving money. It’s costing more.

its saving me a lot of money vs the ICE it replaced that had similar capital cost - lower depreciation, no fuel cost, no tax disc, no zone charges, minimal service costs …… then income / corporation tax …… which is a biggy !

Plenty of far cheaper (capital) costs EV’s out there, @Chris F polestar which i’ve been in for many miles is great and costs loose change to lease / run as a company car - way less than similar or equivalent ICE would

we are heading to Agritechnica in February in it so will test Europe’s charging infrastructure

But then you have to take in consideration the cost of a Starbucks coffee,
Family of four stopping at Starbucks is going to cost at least £25 !!!!

frankly i need a break / pee / refreshments every 200-250 miles

you should take breaks on safety grounds alone

big plus side vs petrol garage is not being tempted to eat the chocolate that surrounds the tills in every garage and lower cost the electricity vs petrol more than covers the coffee

Warwick services a few weeks ago there was 10 chargers but only 4 working and a queue of people waiting to charge. A couple started arguing about who was next because one bozo only had 1% left on his battery. I drove off in my v6 laughing.

couple months back i lost count of the q’s for petrol stations i drove past or people fighting over fuel 🤣

i don’t drive EV “because climate change”

i drive EV because its saving me a load of cash, its more convenient than ICE most of the time and it’s a really nice car
Get that alot

people like to rush to the conclusion I'm "some greenie" when I really just like:-
not doing much work,
making more income,
and being able to crouch down and drink out of the creek - like I should be able to on a farm

when it's actually about you.... and what you like...

🤷‍♂️

But your EV is not financially viable to a normal income family,

not only porsche sell ev’s ! you can spend millions on a ICE car if you are fortunate enough …….. doesn’t make all ICE cars expensive however does it !

polestar or others even cheaper can be leased and if a company car will be far lower cost than similar / equivalent ice to both lease and run

you don’t know what you are missing for a couple extra £ on the ticket ! i usually walk out with my weight in food and coffee to eat on the train / onward journey

its good value……….especially if there are ever delays, i usually book flexi plus as never sure on return times and it’s included foc
Flexi is only really worthwhile for February half term, the rest of the time it’s just a nice luxury. We tend to drive down on standard and flexi back

The pro and cons of this debate will go on and on, each of us with our thoughts and beliefs,
I do wonder in 25 yrs time when I will be nearing 90yrs old, what will we be saying,
‘In hindsight,’ I wish, _______________. ?

The issue with electric cars isn’t an issue for top end cars.
For example a £100k diesel/petrol Range Rover will still cost the same as a £100k electric Porsche Tesla or Volvo etc.
The issue is at the bottom end.
For example
Volvo XC60 family car
Diesel is approx £40k electric is £60k.
Vauxhall corsa petrol is £12-15k electric is £25k
Golf petrol approx £20k electric £35k.
For people on standard incomes, electric vehicles are still an aspiration/luxury they can’t afford

Lucky you, but doesn’t help when you’re away from home. Fairly sure @Clive has infinite range at home, assuming the copper wires don’t break.

Got a friend who works for western power and he said the infrastructure isn’t in place and they’ll be loads of power cuts so then rural premises will need generators to get power. He’s about 60 and started his working life for EMB and now is a trouble shooter for big issues.

People who rely on their cars everyday for work suddenly can’t charge overnight will cause major issues. Employers won’t stand for it as it’s not a valid excuse to be off work.

think you maybe surprised - if you lease something like a polestar and take full advantage of tax benefits it could be costing circa 350 per month plus bugger all running costs

there are alternatives far cheaper than a polestar as well

we are talking new cars here as well - as time goes by availability of value used cars will grow

20k mile service my brakes were inspected at 5% worn ! they don’t do a lot unless heavy braking as they slow car through regeneration most of the time

20k miles service at Porsche involved ………. changing the pollen filter !

MOT will cover safety when old enough as it does any car

so yes ……… bugger all servicing, bad times to be s car dealer /garage coming up !

How much does Porsche charge to change a pollen filter?

True, but the polestar is largely a £25k Volvo that is electric for £40k
