Assuming she'd been doing her usual run on Friday that could have been circa 80-100miles, and then on Sat the same, so 160miles of running.
Not sure what car, and what range we would have but my mate has a Audi Etron that claims 250miles, so taking that headline figure, given its -2°c, been snowy, and the cars going to have heater, demister, wipers on for both that days, what's the real life range? And Mrs FB ain't going to be running down under the 20% battery mark I'm thinking we'd be pretty much done.

We have a wind turbine here and annoyingly it can't run when there is power cuts, but otherwise having an electric battery car would work great for us and allow us an easy way of storing up the power produced, and make for really cheap motoring.
Not against battery cars, but I think the infrastructure/infrastructure planning is not there yet for everybody having one.
It will come but take a while.
Plenty sensible ones available with ranges of 300miles, which is my comfort point - enough to go most way to Edinburgh or Glasgow and then change my mind and come home again - which rules out the e-tron anyway for me.

For your situation this week, I could see a battery too up in the local town would have been easy enough too - assuming everyone else wasn’t doing the same of course. How widespread was/ is the outage?

20k mile service my brakes were inspected at 5% worn ! they don’t do a lot unless heavy braking as they slow car through regeneration most of the time

20k miles service at Porsche involved ………. changing the pollen filter !

MOT will cover safety when old enough as it does any car

so yes ……… bugger all servicing, bad times to be s car dealer /garage coming up !
The manufacturers will start building servicing costs into electric vehicles I guarantee it. If the pads and discs are lasting too long they'll make them thinner. The ones that are being built right now could well be the best built electric cars we ever see, it's only a matter of time before the accountants pick up on the unnecessary durability of certain components.

forget the politics- i doubt selling ice is in any manufacturers business plan any more

Seems not. Ford/VW tie up for the new ranger and Amarok will have 2.0 and V6 engines matched to 10 speed boxes as well as some kind of hybrid.
That drive train is also going into the new Transit and Transporter vans. I saw this yesterday at an online pre launch for a car research company.

Hasn't happened with Volvo. First service at 18k miles is £63.

How dealers will exist is beyond me at those prices.

This is the whole problem, I’m not in denial about climate change, obviously man made or influenced by man, but the panic now is forcing changes too radical and too quick,
This in its own right will create more man made factors that will affect the environment,
Everything is being planned to happen too quick, without contemplating the consequences,
All this just to tick the box, !!

maybe right i agree, that may bring capital costs down as well, in a competitive market that will be an aim for designers and accountants

on current wear rates my brake pads will outlast the car it seems !

Problem with range and range claims is assuming 80% charge from a public charge point, and not running below 20% to allow for unforseens like blizzards, accidents, hold ups like Clive the other day, to give peace of mind for those who don't like playing charger roulette.
Then include cold weather, heater/demister draw, wipers, lights, radio, on a car with say a 4 or 5 yr old battery, What is the real range figure left?
We most of the time could mange with a real (not claimed) range of 150miles.
The car only does a journey more than that on annual hols or like last month we had to do a flying visit to Glasgow for a funeral.

Of course it's all to shite just now due to storm Arwen.

Think there are 53000 folk with no electric since Friday lunchtime in NE Scotland.

i don’t drive EV “because climate change”

i drive EV because its saving me a load of cash, its more convenient than ICE most of the time and it’s a really nice car

They’ll be some back tracking going on. Probably something like only cars will be electric and everything else such as vans, pickups, HGV, Ag etc will be allowed to stick with engines. They’ll tighten emissions obviously but that’ll be it.

Thats fine, but if there are half a dozen of them shared between the 53,000 who no longer have use of their home chargers then there might be a bit of a queue. Don’t discount how rural the north of Scotland is.

Warwick services a few weeks ago there was 10 chargers but only 4 working and a queue of people waiting to charge. A couple started arguing about who was next because one bozo only had 1% left on his battery. I drove off in my v6 laughing.
