It reduces it - as it lessens the metal on metal contact - any particles of steel are in suspension in the oil or grease which provides a film buffer.

The oil or grease may attract other contaminants depending on the ground conditions - but they should be less hard than the steel.

Hardened Steel - 7.5 to 8 on Moh hardness scale
Granite/Quartz - 7 hardness
General road crap - less than 7 unless you are driving over powdered diamonds or silicon carbide etc

My 2p worth.
