It would be interesting to know if these drivers were the farmers or just staff sent out with no equipment to do the job properly?
I can't see many 18 year olds telling the boss they're not going to cart bales unless they have all the straps and everything's road legal.
With no training or tests required how would a newbie even know what was right, especially if the boss told them they didn't need to bother and hurry up the job needs doing now.
Ignorance as an excuse especially when the points are going on your license, not the bosses. You make a great point and probably close to the truth in many cases but the stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me. I've done some stupid sh#t in my young life but also walked away from a couple of bosses who told me to just get on with it. In one case I did apologize to the gaffer as I found out he was right in that it was a legal way but just wasn't comfortable doing it.

My 2p worth.......firm round bales on a wide bed trailer, with one row down the middle holding them on with no straps, will fair better than 4 square bales high strapped.

Think you are right that it is the least bad of two options, but still bad.

TBH that load looks fairly stable to me. The problem for the driver is that being "unsecured" gives the police a reason to pull you over and go through everything with a fine toothed comb if they feel like it.

I'd also say that I suspect there's a higher percentage of "insecure" loads on flatbed or low sided trucks (eg Builders Merchants with big bags of sand etc) than on farm vehicles.

Young or old, you'd have to be f*cking thick to drive that on the road and expect to get away with it. Impound the tractor and the trailer, that'll teach the dumb hicks and stop them doing it again.

40ft bed,+dolly/drawbar,+ tractor= over length
I think the lack of straps was the reason for pulling him over why make it obvious by not fastening down the load I very much doubt they would notice the length of the vehicle till they pulled him over. what I don't understand is why he has gone to all that trouble to make a forty-foot trailer and paint it but not put lades on it so he only has 29 bales on it with lades I get30 on a twenty-four-foot trailer two rows on end two on their sides and a row down the middle
