Cause they catch bollards
not really relevant but they also have low axle loads.
Its all noise and show with those huge trucks, and relatvely low payloads.
They do travel fast though.

IIRC there are different axle weights depending on the axle spacings too.

US trucks are configured a bit differently, most artics (semi’s) are in the classic 18 wheeler / 5 axle configuration, 2 drive axles on the tractor unit and 2 axles on the trailer. When you look at them from the side, you can see that the load will be pretty evenly distributed between the truck drive axles and the trailer.

The box trailers generally appear to have the twin axles on two sliding rails, fully back for road work and forward for maneuvering. The rails look very flimsy compared to our trailer chassis.

Those American box trailers don’t even have a chassis like we have they’ve pretty much cut out the strong bits and mounted the axle and everything to the frame of the box floor

Most standard tandem axle box/fridge trailers have a sliding axle set that can be positioned in different places with a simple air operated pin and hole set up. Depending on the load in the trailer, you might slide them forward to take some of the weight off the truck drive axles or all the way to the back if its nearing max gross weight and is loaded evenly.
80,000lbs or 36,287 kg is the max gross weight with that set up in many states.
Just to make it a pain in the arse many shippers and receivers require the tandems to be set all the way to the back for loading/unloading, which makes moving round site difficult unless you do it when you're in the door.
