I have made a mistake with 6 month old calf on passport from Bcms. I will contact them tomorrow if their open, just wondering if any one else ever had this problem and likely outcome when dealing with them. Genuine mistake.
Thanks.

Just cross out the sex and write the correct sex on passport and send it back to bcms. They will reprint and return it.

I have heard auctioneers say at a sale that a certain beast has the wrong sex on the passport and to change it when you receive the passport so sounds reasonably common, dont worry.

Yes, I have had the same. Cross it out and write on correct sex and send it back. If you want to phone up and tell them you will get a reference number but you don't have to now.

It's the one thing on the passport which should be open to amendment by hand.
I wonder how much postage has been wasted by passports being sent back to BCMS and the returned by BCMS for a relatively trivial mistake.

Do they believe that everything else on the passport is authentic?

As said, BCMS / CTS are a shining light in agriculture's rubbish IT systems.
Polite and helpful, and wrong sex is the top of their most common errors on passports. (It says that on the site) Advice is to cross out, write in the correction and return for a replacement passport.
Phone them if you want a reference number, but that doesn't come automatically for this type of error any more.

We had 12 steers lined up to sell in November and I could only find 11 male passports. No 12 was a steer, but labelled wrongly. I altered the passport and he went through just fine. New owner would then just send the passport back for correction. Apologies as it cost him a stamp. (n)

As said by others on here, the BCMS are far and away the best government agency we have to deal with. They always answer the phone, are always polite and have never failed to solve a problem for us.

But please get the passport fixed. As a fattening unit we have to get several passports amended every year as they pass through markets and rearers who take the attitude of "it doesn't matter".

Sadly, it does matter at the abattoir and passport issues could end with a prime beast being rejected from the food chain at huge expense. It has also caused difficult questions at TB tracing tests in the past, so we now try our best to make sure everything is in order at the point of intake.

Changing the sex is now easy and doesn't even need a phone call. Breed changes are a whole different ball game...

It's easy enough to change the dams eartag on a passport as well. We had a calf born last yr and dad was convinced it was the cows sister who had just calved and applied for the passport with the sisters tag number. When the passport arrived we'd realised the mix up and just sent it back, no questions asked.

Just jumping in on this thread. Bought a suckled calf last autumn, it’s a heifer but only realised today that the passport says male. I’d usually just send it back to BCMS but the thing is, the animal is meant to be heading to a store cattle sale tomorrow. She’ll just be stuck here on her own if I keep her back to get the passport changed or should I just do that to play it safe?? Many thanks

well now you’ve asked it’s going to be awkward. Some things are best not knowing!
