I think on this one we're going to have to jump through the EU RED II hoops.

However, we should have something made available to us other than RT to do this. And seemingly a self-declaration is acceptable to the EU.

Rest of the world always seem to get sel-declaration for such things. We seem to get inspectors and membership fees.

Can somebody explain to me how doing a mass balance on your site guarantees that you haven’t grown biofuels on environmentally sensitive land? Surely all we need to do is declare that we haven’t grown biofuels on environmentally sensitive land.
I’d guess they want a mass balance to help weed out members who are laundering non assured grain through their businesses. If that’s the case they should say so, not hide it behind legislation that’s for something entirely different.

You only have to look at how the government ignored the warnings on water purification for shellfish export in to the EU to see where a problem could lie but, hey, it’s another justification for RT to extract your pennies

It's worse than that as we are self declaring but having to pay someone to check that we have declared, although not checking figures as they are not collecting data.
Don't panic though as if you haven't kept a mass balance as you go along you have 28 days after your inspection to "find" your amounts!

I agree Dr. Doesn't fivecany assurance at all that not grown on environmentally sensitive land. Daft, pointless paperwork that doesn't address the RED issue it's supposed to. Maybe that's EU's fault for accepting mass balance.

Quite. UK growers should have an alternative RED system (other than RT). Not all growers are RT. Think AHDB are best placed to solve this one.

How does it weed anyone out laundering when such people, if they exist, they will simply make the numbers up the day before their inspection to match what they have! Much like most do with fertiliser and chemical store inventories.... My grain estimates at harvest are pretty unreliable I can easily be a out by a couple of artic loads, if I under estimate it looks like I am selling more than I produce and if I under estimate it looks like I have serious storage problem...

US soya producers just need to do a farmer self-declaration. NFU or AHDB should arrange this option for non-RT members.

No auditor required on farm in the US.

and this is all we need ................... turns out the NFU's vice president who has been supporting and congratulatory to Red tractor for adding this requirment had not even heard of this simple alternative, never mind investigated if it was a better way forward than yet more reliance upon Red Tractor

Negligence IMO

Time to get @Danllan on the case. He swears HMG’s government has taken back control, and the people wake up each morning to the sound of the birds singing and “sovereignty”, shining through the window. He won‘t be happy with this....

More like it's time farmers took back control of the NFU, these days it seems to simply go along & support any directive from government or Red Tractor
