Fine tune your second cut fertiliser applications

With a move to more frequent silage cuts on many dairy farms, it won’t be long before 1st cuts are underway. With this in mind, it is worth reviewing your 2nd cut fertiliser application plan and to ensure that you have the right type and quantity of fertiliser in the yard ready for application within the first week post harvesting.

Hi, just wondering what the advice is regarding nitrogen applications in this dry weather? Mark

Hi there, the dry weather is indeed making decisions tricky. If using ammonium nitrate based products then ammonia losses will be minimal - 2-3% so the advice is to apply as planned such that the nitrogen is there as soon as the rain comes.
It would be wise to reduce the rate in line with expected number of grass growth days, and reflect that the nitrogen use per hectare per day will be nearer to 1-1.5 as opposed to the normal 2.5 KgN / ha / day. If using urea based products, ammonia losses will be high, above 20%, so you must wait for a reliable rain forecast within 24 hours of application.

Hope that helps.

How to increase grassland yield

The main yield components of grass are the number of leaves per unit area and dry matter content. Higher yields come from optimising leaf numbers, maintaining a green leaf canopy and achieving a high dry matter content. A balanced fertiliser programme including all macro and micronutrients is essential to help manage all of these components.
