If its anything like my one then yes its a belt driven steering pump as for the manifold i have to wonder, The gap between the loader frame and the bonnet is too small for a normal exhaust which to me suggests that normally it had a downward exhaust thou the silencer could have been taken off at some point. I've always wondered as i bought mine with the custom exhaust made of pipe that fit next to the frame
They were available with either an upright exhaust or a down swept one,the newer 40s had a flattened section to fit between the bonnet and the boom.
 
aye but they learned from their mistakes when the built the 40s, I've spotted the steering pump pulley in the first picture and the steering rams in the second and the shape of the bonnet i'm convinced that this is a 702 industrial Massey that started this thread

The 202, 203 and 205 all had that same shape bonnet with 3 cylinder engines. I agree that the one at the start of this thread looks to have a belt driven steering pump like yours, so would be the earlier 4 cylinder engined 702.

They normally have a upright exhaust, but it's a different elbow to keep the exhaust closer to the bonnet to allow room for the loader

Hi there seen this post and have read the reply that many people have given, this isn't a 203 but a 702 industrial which uses the 23c grey and gold ferguson fe35 4 cylinder engine and a heavy duty 135 rear. It was designed as part of the industrial division range and could be fitted with a black hoe, you seem to be missing the weights from the rear wheels as the loader is exceptionally heavy and can lift the rear end easily when loaded but ultimately best loader i ever used. the clutch is a dry disk as well as dry brake shoes as for the price its not bad its worth the effort as i would say its a bit rare since i haven't seen many and it is commonly mistaken for its torque converter cousin.There were built around the late 50's early 60's

Can I just say that the 1963 203 that Dad had when I was a boy had the lights at the top of the grill (later ones were in lower grill). 3cyl engine but indirect and not such a good starter as the later 3 cyl. Round style wings and dash similar to a pre 100 series MF. On the back was a 220 back hoe/digger which could be removed fairly quickly. On the front the loader was badged as a 702.

There is such a small gap in age between all of these models massey ferguson must have been updating the models constantly before shifting to the "20/50 b" range industrial

I am certain that our machine was totally original. Perhaps the number was not 702 on the loader but it definitely had a different number/transfer to the tractor.

Yes to confuse matters the loader without self levelling was badged as 702 and was fitted to many models of tractor including a 3165S

I have been doing some research, the 702 actually is the loader, not the tractor it is mounted on

What a muddled way to badge and number.
It would seem that the 702 could be a loader or indeed a tractor. Looks like the tractor was, as someone said earlier, based on a 4 cyl 35 but did it have the 65 rear end like the 203/205? :D

@The Happy Herdsman thanks for settling the dispute over models, hopefully that will end any more arguments over the 702's existence. Now we just need to hear back from the op about his one to confirm what engine he has to end the thread. Have to say this has been the best debate over MF industrial's i've had in ages, cheers everyone

Hi All, just to add to the fun, I have what is supposedly a 702 but with a Perkins 3cyl engine. The dash plate identifies it as a 702 and it has been checked out as built in Dec1960. However.... I am now wondering if it is a 203 with a 702 dash or a 702 with a replacement engine. The front axle has about 2" movement forward and back at the axle carrier and the bonnet seems too short by about 1/2" so rather confusing. I am in the process of rebuilding the steering at the moment. It has the 2 ram set up with a turnbuckle on the steering column. My bonnet also hinges on the right so different from the one starting the thread.
