Yorkshire Agricultural Society

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society runs a number of organisations which promote and support British farmers and the countryside year round, and the Great Yorkshire Show is just one of the many events it runs to help do that. All profits made by the Society’s activities are put back into supporting the rural community.

A major part of our work is getting the message across to young people and educationalists of the pivotal role farmers play in putting the food on our tables and managing the landscape. For example, our education department runs a range of rurally based courses at the showground for primary school teachers so that they are better informed for their classroom teaching. Popular events such as Countryside Days and Careers in Focus target specific age ranges - primary and secondary school children respectively. The Society’s educational activities is led by the Charities Activities Committee.

So, who is in the YAS family?
o Farmer-Scientist Network – brings together academics and farmers to help drive practical outcomes to agricultural research www.farmerscientistnetwork.co.uk
o Future Farmers of Yorkshire - younger farmers and industry supporters who meet to network and to learn more from industry and inform their business enterprises http://yas.co.uk/charitable-activities/future-farmers-of-yorkshire
o Yorkshire Rural Support Network – promotes the wellbeing of those living in rural communities through its Network members http://yas.co.uk/charitable-activities/yorkshire-rural-support-network
o Yorkshire Food, Farming & Rural Network – providing a link between the county’s farmers and Defra http://yas.co.uk/charitable-activities/yorkshire-food-farming-rural-network

And our commercial activities:
• Fodder – our award winning food shop and café which champions local producers
• Pavilions of Harrogate & Yorkshire Event Centre – run events and exhibitions on the showground to raise funds for the Society’s work

Our Shows
o Springtime Live – aimed at families with younger children
o Great Yorkshire Show – England’s premier agricultural show
o Countryside Live – the Great Yorkshire’s little sister

Fast Facts:
o Each year the Society spends around £360,000 to support farming and the rural community
o The Showground is used virtually every day of the year with around 700 events taking place
o Around 15,000 children visit the showground annually to take part in educational activities
o Some 800 teachers from across the North of England attend courses at the showground to increase their knowledge of farming and rural life.

Future Farmers for Yorkshire Post – Country Week

Tom Hildreth, Curlew Fields Farm

upload_2016-5-6_7-22-33.png

I am a fifth generation farmer, I work on the family dairy farm at Curlew Fields Farm, Hessay, alongside my family. We are passionate about farming and helping others to understand the work we do – not just to produce food but also managing the countryside.

upload_2016-5-6_7-23-42.png

I am an active member of the Future Farmers of Yorkshire group, the local Grassland Society, Boroughbridge Young Farmers and I recently ran a dairy exhibition at Springtime Live, based at the Great Yorkshire Showground. It is a family passion to communicate our business to the general public and that is why we can’t wait to open our gates to public, once again, for Open Farm Sunday on 5th June.

The public can see at first-hand how our farm operates, and the hard work that goes into the products you see every day on your breakfast table, like milk and butter. We have been supplying Arla with milk for Cravendale for nearly 12 years now, and our milk produced here on Curlew Fields Farm is also used in Great British Anchor Butter.

My father is really good at what he does and I’m learning from him. Our Holstein cattle give 10,300 litres of milk. We still have conventional milking, alongside state of the art automatic feeding and housing. We are always proud to show people around the farm, we have even had visitors from Japan!

This will be our fourth Open Farm Sunday event, and we are to attract around 600 people. Last year’s event was incredible, as was the support from our neighbours and friends. This year, local bee keepers will be on the farm, as well as sheep shearers, and Arla will be bringing products made from our milk for the public to taste, and there will be a lot of farmer friends to talk to.

Whatever your age, Open Farm Sunday has something to offer and is ideal for the whole family. Children can go on a guided farm walk and my family are on hand to talk to visitors. There is also an opportunity to watch the cows being milked and much more besides – many of our visitors are particularly fascinated by all the high tech machinery that farmers use - like the combine harvester.

This year we will be again raising money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, we raised over £400 pounds last year, and Boroughbridge Young Farmers Club will be supporting us in car parking and providing refreshments.

Open Farm Sunday highlights the passion, expertise and commitment that goes into producing the food that we all enjoy and looking after the fantastic countryside around us. The day is a great opportunity to show the public why farming is so important and to help build trust and understanding in agriculture. Never before have the public been more interested in food and farming, and I would encourage farmers to get involved on 5th June, whether by opening your own farm or supporting neighbouring farmers who hold an event – you can register at www.farmsunday.org.

Tom Hildreth is a member of the Future Farmers of Yorkshire group which is supported by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. It brings together younger farmers, vets and industry supporters. [email protected]

There are plenty of ‘firsts’ in store for this summer’s Great Yorkshire Show including a food emporium in our new exhibition Hall 1, a dedicated Home and Gift show in Hall 2 and even more agricultural content than ever.

There will be more for farming visitors than ever, including a live robotic milking exhibition from Lely with 40 cattle providing a unique opportunity to see how technology is changing the face of modern dairying. In addition the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society is holding its Summer National Show with around 100 head of cattle expected. There will also be a programme of seminars/workshops in the seminar room in Hall 1 – including talks from N8 AgriFood, CIEL, CHAP and UKTI to name but a few. The seminars/workshops are free to attend, visit the greatyorkshireshow.co.uk website to see the full programme over the three days and to pre-book your place.

You are invited to our Future Farmers of Yorkshire visit to:

Hinchliffe Farms, Tophouse Farm, Creykes Sidings, Moor Lane, Rawcliffe Bridge, near Goole, DN14 8PU (the post code is accurate for Sat Nav)

On Wednesday 8 June at 6.30pm

The farm visit, which will include a tour of BASF fungicide & biodiversity trials, will be hosted by Richard Hinchliffe and is kindly sponsored by BASF.

Richard Hinchliffe isa partner in the family’s 1400 acre arable farm growing wheat, oilseed rape and beans. Their soils range from medium silty loams to heavy clays and the farm is dependent on a pumped drainage system as the land is on average only six feet above sea level. Richard has worked full time on the farm for the last 14 years since leaving De-Montfort University, Riseholme. He does the agronomy as he is BASIS and FACTS qualified.

Richard is the Yorkshire Agricultural Society 2015 Nuffield Scholar and his topic is Herbicide Resistant Weeds: investigating a sustainable future for arable farming. A second link with the Future Farmers of Yorkshire group is that Richard’s sister, Sarah Graham, sits on the Future Farmers Management Team and is a land agent with Savills.

On the day please meet at the grain store and park on the concrete apron. Ground conditions are weather dependent so stout shoes/walking boots would be a good idea. If it is wet we will have shelter, but please dress appropriately.

The evening will be rounded off with a BBQ on the farm.

To register your place, please email [email protected] before Monday 6 June.
