You tube portraying too glossy side of farming to youngsters?

My eldest spends a lot of time staring at the screen - I mean a lot. Nice farming vids all nice kit - JD heaven. So far he thinks that all farmers wear Ralph Lauren Polos (we are obv scruffy) and everyone in employment is having fun. Little sly comments about what we do here.

Going to be a big learning curve for this chap - finishing school in May.

My son is working for Claas. He’s having lots of fun with machines we’d never be able to buy or need. We are enjoying hearing about it too. When I was a kid I used to collect leaflets for machinery my dad was never going to be able to afford. However it made me ambitious I wanted smart new machinery and now I can buy the stuff I want and need and I even have a Ralph Lauren shirt but it’s very oily.

If he wants to drive tractors he should find some decent places to work fairly easily. You don't have to spend all your time mucking loose boxes out with a hand fork and chucking little bales about these days.
Once he's a couple of years under his belt, he just needs a passport and he can work his way around the world
YouTube is great because it can show you the ins and outs of all kinds of different jobs, not just farming. Gives youngsters a wider view of the world.

He/she will soon learn that YouTube isn't the real world when there stuck in a grain bin with a airline to blow down on a 30 degrees day. Have to start from the bottom in my experience

The fact that he is showing interest in farming is pretty good. There's a distinct shortage of youngsters interested in farming so try not to scare him off.

Very true. My experience with hoeing was just an experiment. I respected the field a bit more after it, too.

Brilliant encourage him, I thought my daughter was work shy but the prospect of leaving school early this year seemed to wake her up, loves shiny things wants a Pink Fiat 500 , finished school 28th May & started a summer job 3rd of June, loves it never seen her so happy, she's gone from not talking to anyone until after midday to bouncing to work in the mornings chatting as she's going .
She's now started a course in Health & Social care & the Hotel where she works have asked her to stay on.
I'm really impressed with her attitude, couldn't image it 12 months ago.
If he wants labels & shiny stuff encourage him to work for it.

I get a phone call every evening from my son telling me what he’s done and where he’s been and what he’s going to be doing tomorrow. This evening I had three quarters of an hour on the advantages of rotary combines v straw walkers. This from someone who had no intentions of ever working for anyone other than us because he wasn’t going to be told what to do.

I remember watching Contryfile years ago, with my children ,and at that stage they were not very politically correct, anyway, they both thought Adam Henson was retarded!

I disagree it inspires and encourages - only in the consumer way. What I see from my eldest and his mates they believe its al about shiny kit and wealth. I put This Farming Life on other night he wasnt interested not enough glamorous kit. Had no interest in the farming just commenting on the kit and what they didnt have. Wasnt interested in the real life aspect of farming just the consumerist side.

glad ive not got your son ! my sons tractors 5 yrs old still shiny and servced to the hilt. ask him what kit he wants? we dont need anything! result , big tax bill! and a right bolloking off the accountant, i thougt it was a alow output year. i think we need to grow more sring barley!

Surely that tax bill could have bought or gone along way to some piece of machinery which would also benefit your business.
Paying tax is literally throwing money away.

I must admit, I watch olliesblog and wonder about all the unnecessary stuff he buys. A fun trip to firbys and a couple of tractors. All a bit unrealistic in normal circumstances imo.
