Young Farmers The End ?

I have read Matt Naylor's article in the Fweekly. Isn't his suggestion basically what happens at the YPV at the Royal Welsh?? Has he ever been? I have once and it sure as hell wasn't a sing song around a camp fire idle that he seems to think a similar event will be!
@Wolds Beef I'm guessing you are still involved in Lincs YFC? If so I'm sure you are well aware of the trouble East Mids has in Skegness, not because of bad behaviour of the members but the irresponsible bar owners in the town, one bar being the main culprit. East Mids have spoken to that bar on numerous occasions about serious concerns about member welfare in the venue- refusal to serve drinks in plastic, lax security and ID policy being the main ones. The event was due to move to a holiday park in Cleethorpes because of this this year but was cancelled last minute due to the 'beast from the east', but that didn't stop people travelling to Skegness and to a rival event organised by one of the bars in town. It will be interesting to see how next years event pans out and how well supported it is.
One thing me and my friends always say about YFC is how safe you felt at a YFC do, even at the AGM when there's thousands of people there. You were never worried about getting split up from your mates as there was always a friend of a friend of a friend who would look out for you if you looked like getting into trouble. There was never any drugs when I was a member, although I've a feeling that it is creeping in unfortunately. The change to over 18's only at do's has also had a negative effect, although it is law, when me and my mates were 16 we went to do's we had a few drinks but there were older members who would keep an eye on you and teach you to drink responsibly, there's none of that now!
Binge culture isn't unique to YFC its endemic across society. My girlfriends mum works in neonatal care in Manchester, she is a nurse in ambulances transporting critically ill babies between hospitals, and she was saying for a month in about October it is virtually impossible to get hold of an ambulance because its freshers week at the several Universities in the city.
What the answer is I just don't know. I just know it shouldn't be up to us past members or those who have never been members to decide, yes we can advise and give ideas but at the end of the day the current membership should decide.

Found the AGM overrated anyway. Enjoyed local YF events a lot more.

Certainly one thing that has changed is now the antics can be filmed by all and sundry, I don't think it was much better behaved in the past, it's just that now there is a lot more evidence.

Win win all round.

Customers get quality food at the same price.
Local suppliers keep trading
Show gets more support.
We went to our local show on Saturday and the whole food job had been given to one company from far away. 3 of us went to get a pork sarnie and very small chips and they wanted £28! We waited til we got home. Happily, the organisers have put up a survey on Facebook asking for suggestions, and this issue has been brought up repeatedly, so next year they have been asked to source local food.

@Whitepeak Thanks, I am aware of what has been happening due to my daughter(age 24, and has ME, so only gets involved when she can.) I am 62 next month, was involved right up to County level in my day!! and very much enjoyed it! We, as a club, went on exchange several times. also went to the Convention several times. It would be sad to see the whole thing fizzle out!! I have put several suggestions on this thread and hoped YF members with a bit of clout might like them. It is a great organisation which has raised 1000's for charity and needs to get away from the public eye!! A Showground would be an ideal way of doing this. Like thousands of others I drank in moderation and cannot understand why they need to get legless!! Our Showground is very accessible, has hosted large Scout and Guide events (up to 5500 young people and 3000 volunteers). All it needs is a bit of guidance from the leaders.

Here is a thought to get you all going ...
Maybe Yf ending would be good for farming.
Farmers seem to socialise with farmers.
Don't mix with public enough.
So public don't know our industry enough.

I was a member for maybe a month.
I asked myself why do I want to talk about farming and farming based events to other farmers when you work on a farm all day??
It's all members seemed to do.
I wanted to do non farming stuff in my spare time and meet more women!

So Quit and went out for nights out with non farming mates from school.
When I get chatting to people and they ask what I do, I say farmer. All the conversation ends up round me as so few people know or understand farming.
End up chatting about farming in a light hearted way that's not crop yields and bad side of farming.
I educate non farmers most Friday and sat night in pubs and clubs and it's easy way to keep chatting to women!

Yf talk to other farmers...
I'm the same. I have farmer friends who I spend time with especially in shooting season and I did join young farmers for abit but tug of war, flower arranging and all that stuff was of no interest.
I have loads of non farming friends and aquantinces who I go out with most weekends. It's good to branch out. The whole young farmers thing can be very very insular.

Totally Agree young farmers is run by young people for young people at the grass roots it is it biggest strength as it develops young people to take responsibility
Clubs that thrive are often the best at bringing on members without much past member involvement
Scouting does this to a certain extent

When East Midlands area weekend was first held at Skegness it was at butlins holiday camp took a lot of convincing the East Midlands exec it would be a success
Nfyfc then held the agm at minehead which was splashed over the tabloid papers
The problem is that young farmers are easily identified
holiday resorts have now marketed them selve to families for weekends away in the past holiday resorts were deserted when yfc were at the agm

As a former young farmer attended convention helped organise the east midlands Skegness event
Yfc is run from the grass roots from club level the top people in yfc need to remember that ast it is yfc unique selling point

Poacher is aimed at a different demographic to yfc
My offspring attended poacher and helped in their day also attended world scout events
Scouting is based around camping it is ingrained in the organisation

Damn shame they’ve cancelled it.

Was plenty of twits when I last went 4 years ago, we shared a bus with some lads from Oswestry who we knew through young farmers. All lads on the bus and it ended up a fair mess but we had a whip round and got a cleaner to sort it for the bus driver who we then took on the pee with us a couple nights.

But as usual there was a minority, some d**kh**d nobody even knew snook on our bus and took a sh!t on the drivers seat! The welsh lads found out who he was, broke into his room emptied his wallet and all his change into the kity bag and marched him to the cash machine to get the rest of the money to pay the bill. Funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

Just a shame people who saw what was going on last year in Blackpool didn’t act and deal with the idiots themselves. Would of shown what YFC really is all about.

I am aware of the demographic difference but our showground can and is used to holding such events so why not try it with YFC. It would bring them away from town centres and contain the event in one place! Anyone trying to get back into the ground after midnight and a session in the city! would be locked out! Bring a bit of discipline into the job!!

Yes it is. That’s why it’s such a good idea! (Although admittedly not that original like all the best ideas!)
Incidentally I don’t agree with the whole article, if youngsters can’t drunkenly stand arm in arm whilst belting out Mr Brightside or sweet child of mine, then what’s the point of being young? The serious stuff comes later
