Very very wet here, flooding where I’ve never seen it before, cattle stranded on islands in fields, have a nasty feeling our river bridge into the 3 largest fields we have has taken a battering too. The water is above the height of the bridge :(

Dad moved down from Scotland to England in 1953, with first harvest in 1954. It rained so much during August it nearly bust them. By the time the local merchant had bought and dried the grain there was a net gain of precisely zero. They had to lay planks in front of their trailed combine as it tended to sink into the ground with the action of the shaker as it tried to pull the wheat up out of a bed of chickweed and redshank.

He wished he had stayed in Scotland on the dairy farm but the next years were a bit better.
Roughly which part of Scotland?

@Cowmangav
Strathaven area. Uncle still farms there. The dairy herd (which were Ayrshires I think) went many years ago. Now mainly sheep and a few fattening cattle. Into his eighties so winding down a bit!
Always interested to read your posts as it reminds me of what the old folk said about farming up there, particularly the rain. My brother wonders about moving to farm in Scotland as down here it has mostly been taken over by large arable concerns and land is unaffordable. However we were always warned about the rain!

So woke up this morning to see our bridge which provides access to our 3 largest fields has given in, and is currently on the banking about 150 yards down the river on a corner. :(

Haven’t seen it myself yet but worker sent me this earlier when he was down. Can’t imagine a new bridge is gonna be cheap :cry:
