Just visited a farm where grower has been encouraged to use Zinc seed dressing to control Aphid (BYDV) in cereals. Totally disagree with that. Any comments?? .

Hmm. I smell bullsh*t. Who is doing the encouraging? Sales rep agronomist? What does this cost/ha?

An attempt at mitigating the symptoms of the virus is dodgy with little science behind this to justify it. Better to use other methods like delaying drilling etc.
Totally agree. I have asked for the data.

It’s all about risk management strategy, buy tolerant variety ( not going to be cheap anyway ) , then spray with pyrethroids to control aphid , use trace elements to improve crop health , biostimulants to improve crop tolerance , please buy all products from us and if yields poor then it is down to weather or pests resistance to existing chemistry. Sorry it’s not my fault

The first thing my chiropodist wife does with verhuca patients is put them on zinc suppliments. Works best on children where they often disappear without any other treatments.

Of course, as with zinc for BYDV, there is no scientific evidence to back this up, but in practice, it works.

How much zinc do you apply , how often and on which cereals? I am in process of putting together all the information so I can share with AHDB for their comments. I have been reviewing several agronomists gatekeeper / muddy boots recommendations and I am finding it hard to convince myself recommending on other farms. It will be nice to know what steps / research methods were used to be ascertain that it (Zn) works. If you have any yields maps etc lease can you share ?

Applied zinc to a field this spring that had evidence of BYDV patches ......... it really did seem to help, patches picked up no end over the following few weeks, yield was no worse that surrounding filed that had no evidence of patches
