Zircon/Solitair in Heavy Land

Yet again struggling to get my amazone with wedge ring roller and rotec discs to get seed coverage in my heaviest land.
There was a post on here the other week saying you got better coverage with steel packer as it didn't roll the soil so tight where the coulters run.
Considering going Lemken next time. Would the same be true of their trapeze roller? Website says it's for light, medium & heavy soil but then says steel toothed one is best suited for heavy soil:scratchhead:
Will their double disc coulters penetrate into consolidated strips behind trapeze roller or would I be better with steel one and the joys of going back to scrapers etc!

Also how do the press wheels perform at this time of year on heavier stuff when it gets a bit sticky?

We've got a lemken with trapeze packer. we're mainly light soils but do have some heavy fields and seem to get to good coverage. you can get plenty of pressure on double disc and press wheels. Why not get a demo?

Press wheels not good when it gets really sticky - Have a Sulky Optiline and have resorted to taking them off as recommended in book, but having said that you are probably getting into conditions where you probably shouldn't be drilling!

Kuhn seedflex or lemken disc system is much better than Amazon for getting seed in the ground we demo'done in 2012 in conditions you definitely wouldn't normally drill into seed lying everywhere took it off put the Kuhn back on and it's was a lot better. Amazon disc seems to kinda smear a little very shallow trench to the side where the double disc opens a proper slot salesman tried to blame rubber ring packer against steel but I know a lad on a 6m lemken says steel packer is worse in heavy land .As for the packer wheels they're made of soft rubber so self clear well more so in sticky land than light stuff straight behind the plough.

Sounds like it's on ploughing. If possible, give the ploughing 24 hours to dry, makes a huge difference to the seedbed.
Obviously if the weather goes against you, you may be waiting until March...

Probably wouldn't be able to afford new so demo out. Noticed Rickerby have a couple of 2 year old ones around the £17-£18k mark which sounds more like my budget.

That was the plan. Oats combined a week ago and straw cleared a couple of days later. Ploughed at weekend, 2 days to dry, 2 days to sow and all finished nicely before Friday's forecast rain was the plan. Didn't bank on these easterly showers though so had to go earlier than planned as like you say may be March before it goes again if we get a lot of rain this weekend

U can put bigger springs on amazon drill if it a special to increase cutler pressure

Didn't know that. Should definitely be worth a try. Really like the drill otherwise just doesn't seem to like the heavier stuff even when a bit drier some years.
Another shower an hour or so ago. Just taken rubber depth limiters off @Sandy. Will go and see how we get on without those.

Got a super with rotec plus but last drill had the twin disc with press wheels. When my amazone is due a change i will go back to a twin disc and press wheel set up. Only thing i would miss on amazone super is the floating power harrow set up .

I liked the look of the kuhn nc i saw a few years ago. Floating power harrow set up like my super with discs like lemken so best bits of both imo.

Twin disc set up does have higher running costs but works much better in heavy going and the amazone press wheels they offer are crap in hilly going

set power harrow a little deeper than what you would like it to run at, then take a little weight on arms so top link is slack. this takes a bit of the weight off packer, plus it tends to tip drill back a little putting more pull on culters

I think you might be interested in this it has floating power harrow new kuhn lighter than nc better built than an lc we've just drilled 600 acres with it and very happy with the results
