Watsons a well respected and well established Scottish seed company in trials back in 2009 found that "The hybrids particularly Swift and Pulsar had significant levels of lodging and bolting this could mean that the digestibility of these plots will fall away quickly." So a known problem I can only think that some of the newer breed material do have notably thinner stalks as opposed to Winfred/Greenland hybrid kales.

Most of it. It was following a 15 year ley and I couldn't afford to burn it off long before planting because I was pretty desperate for grass and was worried about the amount of dead/dying material + it was getting late and dry. I've got a couple of acres at the end where I just went over twice with the ph the broadcast and ring rolled. There is definitely a lower volume of crop there but its leafier and has stayed standing so the I wouldn't be surprised if the DM utilized / ha was pretty similar to the ploughed area

Moore drilled 2nd wheat Horatio, drilled a little late would have benefitted from N. Slugs and rabbits have affected parts of the field. Going to get some N and S next week. Jenny Powell's old house in the background for all the TFF celeb spotters.

It's over 5 years since it was ploughed. 3 year IRG/red clover 2 year wheat. It will go back to IRG in the Autumn. Some of my kindest soil.
Do you find first wheat behind clover/ryegrass ley works ok? I'm worried about frit fly and general over-grassiness...planning to sow a broadleaf crop behind ley this year.

For too long I was focused on leatherjackets while frit fly were a bigger issue. I've only a limited arable area so it makes sense to stick to one crop. Going forwards only high fertility situations, intensively grazed leys, will not get Autumn N having seen good results on a couple of fields. We have seen a bit of volunteer IRG after the short term leys, but I think more timely herbicide application is enough to sort that.

Thought I'd just put a picture if my calves on kale on here to give the soil structure gurus some sleepless nights!View attachment 111980

(I actually love the dd section and hope to make a general move away from ploughing, but not after kale)

It is also worth stating that when the brassica is DD the ground holds up much better than when cultivated. I also find that the only lasting damage from this system is from taking machinery into the field so avoid this by pre placing bales etc.

I'd backup second quote. Under notill kale, the pugging would likely be a lot less unless the winter was very wet.
We also notill spring crops into pugged conditions in NZ. Requires correct management but we have to do it a lot.

First time I've seen what looks like Mn deficiency in no till wheat. It is an extremely light field and very soft soil causing disc stall on drilling. Will pop the sprayer on tomorrow for this and another light field that isn't showing symptoms yet.

It's got an internal leak past the seals on the steering ram which has made it pretty difficult to drive accurately as it wanders offline constantly. Waiting for a new ram to come in so I put the drill on the JD and the case went out with the rolls where it couldn't do much harm.
Ah fair enough
