worst year ever

The weather travels in 30yr cycles along with the moon. For those of you not old enough 1985 was the worst here in living memory. Combine that with the fact we are in a period of declining sun activity and we are where we are.
Swampy &co are convinced that our race to global warming will cancel this effect out. If you remove 1998 from the figures then the world has been getting colder since the eighties which as someone who works outside i will accord with. This of course relies on using temp figures that are UNADJUSTED for global warming. The world is now so hot that there is 30% more ice in antartica over the last 15 years, its just round the other side, and there is 40% more ice in the artic since 2013. This of course is a short term development while all the worlds excess temperature lies hiding at the bottom of the ocean, Not. There will be variations but for you young lads and lasses put your money on the plebs ice skating under Tower Bridge on the Thames by about 2035.

Just got back in from attending the Dalmally Fair day of suckled calves. I swear I've never seen Argyll look worse on the last day of July.

It was dry on the drive there in the morning but started raining shortly after. Rained all day after that. Trade for calves was good - only bright spot on the day. Rained all the way home and got increasingly heavy. Where are the tourists? I remember when the end of July saw the West coast roads choc a bloc with traffic. A miserable Summer and a strong pound have seen everyone fly off to foreign climes and a bit of forgotten Sun.

At Inverary , normally a busy little hub for day trippers and coach parties , a fair number of drookit visitors crowded under awnings and filled the coffee houses to overflowing , but not in the crowds that used to. The various small villages on the road have all made a brave attempt to hold the usual funfairs. A depressing collection of small carnival rides and attractions are deserted - windswept and rainlashed , the prospective punters are forgoing the delights of a soaking wet dodgem seat in favour of something more warm and comfortable. Hopefully the night-time , traditionally the busy time for the Summer fairs , will see better weather and more customers.

Rainwater running on the roads , burns crashing down white off the hills. Saturated fields churned brown where some poor buggers have tried to make silage in desperation of ever getting a decent forecast to do so.

We need Sun. We need a decent spell of dry. We need it very badly now. Every week that passes takes us closer to a serious situation.

August 1st tomorrow. What will August bring?

Welcome to my world!! If summer dose not come soon we are in serious trouble, totally wrecked a field yesterday trying to make silage, both tractors stuck, hauling bales till 3 am last night!! Because if we did not get them off last night they could be there till next year going by the long term forecast, sheep are starving and grass looking like it's been sprayed with round up, hardly seen a day above 12 degrees all summer!! The sh!t is about to hit the fan!!

It has dried up here a bit but still cold with not great grass growth. The occasional warm day everything really grows but most days it struggles to 12 and cold at night.
Nfu man on reporting Scotland the other night didn't seem to think it's much of a problem!

Bloody Hell , that's a desperate situation @west coast angus . The combination of the wet and the cold has just knocked grass on the head this year. Was speaking to a well known Stirlingshire farmer today in Dalmally , and he was saying the same story for his hill unit. No warmth , no grass , hill lambs struggling. It's been an awful year for hill stock.

Although we are struggling to get a couple of dry days in a row, however annoying that may be, I am aware that we aren't that particularly bad, we had a late spring, then a cold drought during the growing period, now constantly wet, which I'm sure to many further south who had hay cut two months ago and silage cut 3 months ago sounds like apocalyptic conditions.

But I can honestly say that the more I hear about things in other parts further West and North in the country, it makes me realise am having a p!ss easy summer in comparison to you guys @west coast angus, I really hope it dries up for you soon!!!!!

Had a haircut a couple of days ago and my barber was really not happy. He was meant to go on holiday last week to Germany for a river cruise. It was cancelled because there was not enough water to safely navigate the ship.

Here in West Wales it is a good average year for rainfall but my feeling is that it is far colder than average.

Sorry guys. You're only a handful of miles across the sea from us, but we've had an OK season up til July. Cold through may, but then the grass went mental through June. As a result, I don't recall seeing grazing swards as tatty as this in a very long time. A lot of people got totally out of their depth with the grassland management. The worst of those of course are the land owners who took their land back to become 'active' for the same of the new SFP.

Mind you, its been going down hill all through July and starting g to really show now. We are dipping into silage ground now to support the grazing platform.

thanks Martin, figures crossed we get an Indian summer!
Yes hill man, it's been a feed merchants paradise!! I am really fearfull of what lies ahead one things for sure the feed bill will be massive,

Have they cut hay yet? CharcoalWally down that way.

Suffering the exact same here in Tyrone, another week and grazing ground will be gone, we got lucky with one field of second cut that came early. We can take a third cut off that or graze it which leaves us some leeway. Still the rest of the silage ground to go though.

There seems to be a lot of 'hay' in the country left to cut, people leaving it to end of June/July and not getting the weather - its still standing now

Its really been pishing wet this last week, there wasnt 3 dry days together since mid June - mid July but at the same time there was no proper rain until this week which has really set the thing back; Really annoying.

Horrible cold Spring with very slow grass growth, I would have said, followed by a very hot spell but with cold nights, followed by November for the last week or so. My under cover (tunnel) temperatures are still falling to below 10 C at night and have only had about one full week above the whole season. The grass seems to be in short life expectancy mode with species running to seed very quickly - sheep starting to get cheesed off with what is coming through in the bottom. My hay is still to be cut but it's ancient hay meadow so if I don't get it in July it will come back in August with something else. It's not the worst year we've had in the last 20 but there is plenty of time left.

That sounds terrible, sounds like you are going to need some feed, I do hope it sorts its self out and you boys get a good back end
strange how it can be so different in different regions, the boys in wales were on a different thread talking about topping grass as the hay wouldn't be worth anything and I think someone said they couldn't give grass away

Today's weather,

Torrential rain, with gale force winds and very heavy Hail stone showers!!!!!!! What the fuk is happening!!!!!

Time to emigrate to Essex? Don't get depressed now - it'll be winter in a few months

Can't believe the weather difference between N and S of this small island. It's only 5-600 miles from one end to other and amazes me how different the climate is.
