I've bought a fresh vertical tub mixer,it needs both augers rebuilding found some cheap 14mm plate (originals were 15mm) does anyone know a firm that will make the flights?

Or failing that has anyone done one or know how?

We did a reflight and reline on a RMH single auger tub mixer not long ago.

After a ton of looking about I found these guys http://www.rotospiral.com/
They were recommended on a thread on the BFF

I was delighted with the job they did. Took a few emails and phone calls to get it sorted and one chase up, but the flights they made are first class, and good lads to deal with.

They are in South Ireland and we are in NE Scotland so I just gave them the measurements and they made the flights and sent them up on a pallet.
We welded them on ourselves. They do full rebuild service for all types of auger and they have the measurements of a lot of the tubs but not our one.
Getting the pallet over from Ireland was a doddle too, 46hrs exactly from when I sorted the address out over the phone, and when you are up here thats good!
The flights fitted our centre tube pretty much perfect with a little bit of trimming to get 100%.
They supplied new blades and backing plates too and you can get the flight drilled to suit a cheaper blade perhaps, the lad said that there is a particular blade that fits many brands of mixers so is often cheaper.

If I was a bit closer I think I'd be tempted to send the augers to them and get them done there, an oversize pallet charge both ways was going to make the job a bit expensive for us.
I imagine that your augers might be a bit smaller than mine so that would help too.

I certainly wouldn't consider trying to bend and cut flights yourself, once you see the made article and how tricky it is to get the rise and the turn right you will think the same. 14mm plate takes a hell of a push to bend!

If I was down in your bit of the country I'd be loading them up on the Ivor Williams and taking the Mrs on a break to Ireland! ;)

Flight making is quite a complicated process. In the past I once tried to weld pieces together but it wasn't a success.

Astwell have a flight rolling machine, one of the few in this country.

If you do use Astwell, please mention me. I do a bit of business with them, but although it's not a lot, I appreciate their efforts, and would like them to know.

Just a thought ...........

Would you try contacting the mixer manufacturer about replacements, off the shelf?

Or is it an oddball

I have a price from the importer for both replacement augers and steel ready to weld on mine.

I just thought I'd see what the forum comes up with 1st :)

I had a pal a bit back , did night maintenance for a macaroni manufacturer. He used to refurbish augur flights and they were food grade stainless steel ones , machined from a solid bar ! He said he checked the price of new (astronomical) and did the repairs on a percentage basis . He said that he got a lot of very valuable technical help from BOC. . He also said that a helix was one of the things that couldn't be represented geometrically. Might even have been the only one. (You learn all sorts of things here ):geek::geek:

I wouldn't be surprised if your mate is right. I could draw the outer edge or the inner edge, but the bit in between.............? A few lines to represent a particular point on it, but that is all.

There is an ad in agricultural trader this time, a guy selling weld on plates to go around the outer edge of the auger in diet feeders £19.50 a metres in pieces about 6 inches long, sounds a small price to pay to save the main wearing part!
