Precisely. .and as it gets a bigger obsession you throw more and more money at it..just to try and stay at the top of the pile

As has been kind of said..match ploughing isnt so much about the skill involved (although that still plays a huge part)

Its more about who can afford the fanciest rig and curry favour with predicable judging

If I thought you knew what you were talking about I could really take offence at that. I and many others started with standard ploughs and have modified them using old plough parts, used our own grinders and welders and hours of dedication - but not until I had spent 2 years learning how to plough and mastering my plough so I knew what I wanted to change. Your welcome to look at my plough any day - you wont find any parts that were bought in or that cost a fortune to make - just long hours. Most of the mods that do the most cant be bought - its usually done with the gas and a hammer ;). Honestly, some of you talk through your a***s!

As many will testify, you can (and many have) spent a fortune on buying the best kit going - but if you haven't got the skills you might as well stay at home when it comes to winning - all the gear, no idea.

Wouldn't worry about what he has to say Colin, at 28 years old he seems to have less maturity than most 16 year olds, and seems bitter and twisted about anyone or anything successful, but to top it all rekons his old 1594 can compete with any modern tractor

You seem to think you know me well, you know nothing, still waiting for you to prove you are making more money than those using finance, but I will wait a long time won't I, I doubt the problem here is I just don't like bull shitters

I dont like ..tossers...but I have to hold a conversation with you often enough.

Had been advised by a few on here not to rise to your bait with regards to my accounts..it is quite petty how you swan about on here criticizing everyone and everything trying to be a one man vendetta

Still...if you shout loud enough and often enough you sometimes get heard

Wether your listened to is another question

I can see both sides of the coin. And the bank balance is a large factor. For example, if you feel the need to mod your mould boards, in the back of your mind, the fact that you can or cannot aford to replace them if things go wrong, must have a bearing on what you do. Likewise, firms like Wrights would have no market for their comp parts. I am lucky, I was able to make my coulter mounting, and tailfins. However, not everyone can, and thats when the pocket depth and filling effects the standard of work.

BUT a good ploughman with a standard plough will more often than not knock spots off a numpty with all the bells and whistles because the good ploughman understands the plough and what he is trying to achieve and how to make the plough work for him rather than blindly relying on an expensive toy to do the job for him - all the gadgets and levers in the world wont help if you don't know which one to adjust!!!!!!

Which goes on to say, that a good man with a large wallet, will finish in front of one with a small one, and I dont know of any "numpties" with expensive oufits.

Not really, as since when do you need deep pockets to do your own modifications? Most guys I know are usually fair engineers who do the work themselves. OK - I haven't got many gizmos on my plough - would I do better if I had? - no, I don't think I would - might finish a bit quicker so take some pressure off myself - but then I am the sort of chap who carries a pocketful of coins and some M10 and M12 nuts to wedge something into position rather than making a fancy threaded adjuster - and definitely wouldn't buy one! Expensive outfits that don't win prizes? - yea I can think of a few - good luck to them if that's what they want - I just plough to win and I know the kit only takes you so far ;)

I too make all my own mods, and as posted earlier, built the plough from basicly scrap parts. There are things I have been told it needs, for example, 25 bodies, or my boards altering to do similar style work. However, I cant afford 25s, and dare not touch the boards I have for fear of scrapping them, so in this case the bank ballance is certainly having an effect on the work I can do, though perhaps not on the positions gained. Some would say that I should pack it in as its not a hobby to run on a very frayed shoestring, but without the "also rans" there would be no competitions.
I believe that you yourself gave up after the world match some time ago, as it cost you so much. However, without that amount being available, you could not have competed, so the bank balance did effect your status as a competitor.
It is a sad fact of life that money always changes things, and not allways for the bettter.

Not strictly correct - I decided not to go to Croatia as previous trips had depleted reserves - I could have gone but I could have ended up with a bill I might have struggled to meet. The only reason I have been temporarily out of action for a couple of years is workload - taking on new ventures and wishing to help the boys take over from me on the contracting business.
My bank balance affected whether I could attend but I doubt whether it would have made a lot of difference to my performance had I gone.

In the rare happening that I win a cup, I now leave it with the organisers, some are so valuable that I couldnt afford the insurance premium, let alone the replacement cost!(the two championship trophies at a popular Berksire match are valued at £32.000.00 and £16.000.00 respectlvely, being antique silver with royal provanance).
What is "worth it" is looking over the plot at the end and seeing a good piece of work, or perhaps being instructor on a novice class, and seeing the smile on their faces when they too look, and see an improvement in their work.

I sometimes have wished I left the cup behind as workload can dictate having to stay at home but cup means finding someone to return it or going to match to return, by which time you may as well compete, however if I did that at all matches I would have no need for my trophy cabinet, and so it goes on................................

I am sure it is up to match organizers to insure silverware though? if not I better up the contents insurance on house policy(n)

These silver cups are a liability but the cost of respectable trophies to keep are getting ridiculous. £ 20 for a hideous piece of plastic is the norm for something you wouldn`t give houseroom. Unless a match has good sponsors or competitors are prepared to pay realistic entry fees (say £20) there is no answer.
